The Roc Paradet circular from Prugnanes

A beautiful, fairly challenging circular between Aude and Pyrénées Orientales with a magnificent 360° panorama at the summit of Paradet as a reward.

Description of the walk

Car park at the entrance to Prugnanes.

(S/E) From the car park, walk up through the village to the Benjamin Lodge on Rue de Palmières, the starting point for your hike. From the lodge, turn right onto Rue de Palmières. Continue along theGR® 367 (red and white markings) on the track towards the north-east until you reach an intersection.

(1) Leave the track and take the steep climb on the left. You will walk along a balcony before reaching a forest and then a crossroads.

(2) You will rejoin theGRP® Tour des Fenouillèdes. Turn left. You will reach a large plateau before starting a very gentle slope. A beautiful view of Pech Bugarach opens up before you reach an intersection.

(3) Leave theGR® and take the path on the left. A few dozen metres later, you will reach a track and rejoin the GR®.

(4) Turn left. The climb is very gentle until you reach the coveted Roc de Paradet.

(5) Enjoy the magnificent 360° view (Bugarach, Canigó, Capcir peaks, Tabe Massif, etc.) before beginning the descent.
Be careful on this section, as the markings are inconsistent and very scattered over a hundred metres.
You will come to an intersection.

(6) Leave theGR® and take the descent to the left (yellow markings). A few metres further on, ignore the path on the right that descends to Caudiès. A few metres further on, a small path on the left leads you to a cave. Then continue downhill.
Be careful, as the descent through the woods is very technical and sometimes very steep, with very irregular yellow markings.
You will reach the road.

(7) Take the road on the left and a few metres later, take a hairpin turn onto a secondary road on the left.
This route will take you directly to the Lodge Benjamin. All you have to do now is return to the car park at the bottom of the village of Prugnanes (S/E).

We went hiking on 23 April 2025 and got lost at the start in the forest because there were hardly any markings. As a result, it took us eight hours to complete the route. The most difficult part was navigating through the forest, which was almost impenetrable because it was so dense. There are also not enough signs at Roc de Paradet.

About a hundred metres before Roc du Paradet, turn right at the cairn and continue to Chinchol Cave. It is located to the left of the slightly uphill path. The entrance is very narrow and steep, but you can safely descend by looking for a tiny path a few metres before it that leads down to the cave.
After No. 6, take a detour to the two other caves. The first, much smaller, was used by shepherds to shelter their flocks.
The Grotte aux Loups (Wolf Cave) is listed as a historic monument and is the most beautiful of the three. It has beautiful ribbon stalactites. It is easy to access and you can walk through it to the end. Be careful not to disturb the bats. The floor is slippery and a torch is necessary.
After point 7, go back up the road a little to the karstic cave (60 metres deep). It is located on the edge of the ravine above the Caudiès road.
The caves and karstic cave, combined with the landscapes, views, and diversity of the route, make this a very enjoyable hike.

A beautiful hike on an easy route. Thyme, flowers, stunning scenery...
Don't forget a torch to enjoy the caves.
At the end of the route, the path deviates from the trail but remains clear.

A pleasant hike with the wolf cave, Roc Paradet and breathtaking views. We preferred to do this hike in reverse, as we found it more enjoyable.

A very beautiful hike with varied landscapes. The descent went smoothly, even though there were a few short steep sections that were a bit slippery (soil with gravel on the surface).
Lovely view of the fenouillèdes.

The hike took place in clear weather with strong, very cool winds. However, we remained sheltered because, apart from the plateau at the peak, the entire route is sheltered by the forest. The views alternate between Canigou and the wind turbines to the south, then Bugarach once you reach the plateau. The effort is required at the beginning. The caves (be sure to bring a headlamp or torch for each person) really add to the enjoyment of the walk. Children will love it, and adults too. Be careful not to disturb the hibernating bats.
A GPS is very useful, especially on the plateau. The GPS track for the section due east, after the caves, is off the path, but if you follow the donkey droppings, you won't get lost.
After the caves, the narrator is right to recommend caution on the way down. It is stony (more in the sense of "poorly paved" than "rolling stones"), and it is easy to twist an ankle. During the walk, we witnessed a civil security intervention on this section, where a hiker with an injured foot or ankle had to be winched up by helicopter. We would like to take this opportunity to thank these rescue professionals, without whom we would be very helpless in certain situations.

Route covering a GPS distance of 13.5 km;
A very beautiful hike without any major difficulties. Along the way, there are two caves a few metres apart that are worth a detour to visit and add an extra dimension of interest to this route.
The view from Roc Paradet requires careful timing of your walk so that you can eat at the summit, which requires clear weather to appreciate the view it offers.

A magnificent route, no regrets! We didn't meet anyone else, but we were there at the end of the season, the day before All Saints' Day, so that seems normal. In any case, the paths are very well maintained. Most of the hike is under the cover of trees, which can be very pleasant when it's hot. Magnificent view at Roc du Paradet. Rocky descent but accessible for walkers used to stones.
