The Source of the Agly and the Salt Spring

A very pleasant hike, but best avoided in summer.
Beautiful views of Bugarach and the Corbières. Along the route, you can see the site of the old glass furnaces and taste the saltwater spring.
The hike is classified as difficult because you need to know how to find your way, read a map and/or follow the GPS track.
The GPS track and map are almost essential as there are many paths and the trails are not always well marked.

Description of the walk

Park at the junction of the D14 and Chemin du Hameau de la Bastide, in the car park next to the rubbish bins.
Please note that parking is prohibited in the hamlet.

(S/E) Take the road towards La Bastide, pick up theGR® 367 coming from Camps sur Agly, marked in red and white, and follow it north-west for 1.3 km.

(1) Leave the Bastide road and theGR®367and turn right, heading north, onto the path that descends to the Ruisseau des Pastressis (marked in yellow and signposted "Source de l'Agly").
Cross the stream and climb up to a large meadow. A discreet path branches off to the right heading north-west (use the GPS track) and descends towards a stream. Cross it at the point where the two streams converge and climb up opposite heading north for 20 m.

(2) Leave the path and, a few metres to the right, you will see the Source Agly springing from a rocky cavity. Return to the path and continue climbing to reach the D14.

(3) Descend for about 50 metres to the right (east) and just after the sign for "Forêt Communale de Camps-sur-Agly," take the steep climb up the gully on the left. Then climb a path (no longer marked but obvious, use the GPS track) that leads to the Ciela de la Pause forest track.

(4) Go up the track to the left (west-northwest).
At an altitude of 750 m, you will reach a clearing in the forest with a trail junction. Cross the clearing and take the trail that descends to the right (northeast) for 300 m until you reach another trail at an altitude of 724 m.

(5) Descend to the left in a hairpin bend for about 250 m.

(6) At an altitude of 706 m, leave the track and take the path on the right (north-east direction), descend a little then turn right onto the wide path. You will arrive at a small clearing. The path to take is almost opposite in the north-east direction (vegetation may hide the start a little). The path then follows the valley in the Forêt de la Verrerie.
Just before the highest point, at an altitude of 842 metres, some yellow markings on the trees are helpful. The climb becomes steeper. Leave the forest to reach a clearing, but do not enter it.

(7) The path is slightly to the right and enters the forest. There are no markings, but there are paths. Simply follow the north-west direction to reach the track at an elevation of 822 metres.

(8) Turn left onto this track on the plateau and follow it west-southwest for about 1.2 km. It then turns north for 300 m and joins the Pas del Capellan.

(9) When the track turns left, leave it and follow the path on the right for 100 m (northwards, signposted Source Salée and Fours Verriers, yellow markings).

(10) At the Entre sel et verre sign , take a 15-minute round trip to the Fours Verriers site , which is magnificent and has information panels.

(11) Return to the fork and turn left towards Source Salée, 17 minutes to the east.
A little further on, stay on the upper path, signposted Source Salée 5 min, to reach the spring.

(12) Leave the spring behind you, cross the Salz stream and head towards the picnic tables, passing in front of the salt boilers' huts.
From there, take a narrow passage on the right, heading north-east. The path climbs up along a valley and runs alongside a cliff on the right. Join a track at an altitude of 811 metres.

(13) Take this track to the right heading south. Pass Trou del Relhe, a large depression. 600 m further on, at the next intersection, at an elevation of 823 m, continue on the track to the right, on the Route Forestière la Verrerie. Further on, at an elevation of 790 m, you will reach another fork.

(14) Follow the track on the left. 100 m further on, in the bend, leave this track and take a small, discreet path that descends. Reach the Ruisseau de la Pause stream and follow it, sometimes on the left bank, sometimes on the right bank.
At the edge of the forest, at an altitude of 540 m, the path becomes a track and enters the hamlet of La Pause on the left. Leave the road on the right.

(15) Turn right, heading south, and join the D14 at the car park (S/E).

Parking is prohibited in the hamlet of La Bastide. However, it is possible to start from Camps-sur-Agly.

Worth a visit

Fontaine Salée: a geological curiosity, this spring has the distinctive feature of containing several grams of dissolved salt per litre of water, making it twice as salty as the water in the Mediterranean Sea.

Glass furnaces: not far from the Source Salée, the Salines forest glass workshop is a remarkable archaeological site thanks to the remains of its two particularly well-preserved heating structures: a melting furnace, over 6 metres long, equipped with a double sole system, and a secondary annealing furnace. Information panels on site.

A superb circular loop completed in early autumn. Magnificent colours, mushrooms...
There is indeed no path in places, but that's not really a problem as the app makes it easy to find your way. You just have to push through a few brambles.
I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of vegetation and the geological features.
A real treat...

The description warns us right from the start: some paths no longer exist. I must admit that the GPS helped me a lot to make progress, roughly following the direction I needed to take. But in this setting, it has its charm! I found mushrooms (no one passes through here...) and brambles. The scratches on my hands came back to haunt me when I tasted the water from the salt fountain! It stings before you drink it 😂! The source of the Agly comes out of a small cave that requires a torch or headlamp. Beautiful day.

Part of the route where it is difficult to follow the path as not many people go there, otherwise it was nice.

An interesting hike with varied vegetation along the route.
The unmarked section can sometimes be difficult to find due to the dense vegetation, which is not maintained, even for experienced hikers like me.
But with a GPS, you can find your way, just be careful.
Worth doing again.

A very beautiful hike, both for its heritage interest and its landscapes.
The source of the Agly is a beautiful spot, as are the glassworks sites. The salt spring site is magnificent.
The route is difficult to follow in some places due to tree felling and windfall that obscures the path. From point 6 onwards, the path is more difficult to follow, and we lost it and had to use our sense of direction to find the route between 8 and 9, where the forest is magnificent.
The temperature reached 31°C, but this did not bother us at all as more than 80% of the route is in the undergrowth.
Similarly, the descent presents some difficulties in following the trails, as there are several marked in yellow after point 14.
In summary, a very beautiful hike that we would recommend.

A beautiful circular route for its landscapes and cultural attractions. A good warm-up walk for the Pech de Bugarach circular route via the Col de Linas the next day... GPS is important for finding your location and guiding you.
