Around the Galamus Gorges

A beautiful, challenging hike around the Galamus Gorges, which you will follow from the start of the route.
The arrival at Pla de Brézou is also magnificent. A huge space at this location.

Description of the walk

The start is at the car park just before the narrow road to the Gorges de Galamus.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the red and white markings ofthe GR®307Aand turn left onto the very narrow D7 road to the Gorges de Galamus for just over a kilometre. Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Agly river below.

(1) Leave the D7 road at the sign indicating the change of department and theGR®307Amarkings, taking the path that branches off to the right towards Col das Souls.
Please note that this section is very steep. There is a difference in altitude of more than 300 metres over approximately 700 metres. You will arrive at an intersection.

(2) Follow the red and whiteGR®307markings, ignore the sign for Cubières on the left and turn right.
Pass the sign for Col das Souls on the path and continue for about 100 metres until you reach another junction.

(3) Stay on theGR® by turning left. You can rest your legs on this fairly easy section. Reach the Sarraoute ridge, where a fairly steep descent begins.

(4) Be extremely careful on this section.
In fact, you will need to use your hands from time to time as the descent is dangerous and technical.
The slope levels out a few metres before you reach the vast Pla de Brézou meadow.

(5) Leave theGR®307, which heads straight ahead, and follow theGR®36, which turns 180° to the right. This section allows you to rest your legs among holm oaks, arbutus trees, junipers and boxwoods.
Later, the path turns into a track.

(6) Col de Corbasse (419m).

(7) Walk along the Maury on your right and join the D7.

(8) Take this road to the right onto theGR®36and finish your pleasant hike along the road to (S/E).

Great route, minor drawback from point 1 to 2: very steep climb, difficult to find the markings. Otherwise, the rest of the route is magnificent. On a clear, sunny day, there is a 360° view of Quéribus Castle, Puilaurens Castle, Canigou, the Roussillon plain and the Aude. And also a view of Bugarach. I recommend it, it's a superb hike. (As an aside, I did it twice in a row, "on reconnaissance and with a group.") And both times it was sunny, blue skies and no wind.

Great hike. Beautiful 360° views. The Galamus Gorges are as impressive as ever.
We did the hike in reverse. The descent at the end is very, very steep. Next time, we will continue along the path and descend further, even if it means more tarmac.
Despite this difficult descent, we have fond memories of this hike.
Thank you.

After following the beautiful road through the Galamus Gorge for 1 or 2 kilometres, which is not very busy in September, the path climbs very steeply to the right. There are few signs on the barely visible trail. Despite the GPS and the Visorando app's maps, we had to turn back several times before completing this first part of the hike. It deserves to be classified as "difficult". The view from the summit is magnificent, but the descent over the rocks is a little complicated and should be done carefully. Finally, the last part on the tarmac road to the car park is uninteresting.

Yesterday, as usual, I downloaded the route and followed it as indicated by launching the Waze app, starting from the Ribes car park (I'm not from the area but I come here very often using Visorando). And surprise! I followed the entire Visorando route only to realise that it didn't match the route I had read at all. Mine included two climbs with an elevation gain of 893 m, but I never walked along the Galamus Gorge or saw the Pla de Brezou, with the added bonus of two fords three-quarters of the way through the hike, where Ihad to cross a temporary stream with slippery pebbles for the first one. But above all, there were few views except for the last hour because I was always in the undergrowth. In short, I went to visit the hermitage at the end of my hike and finally saw the gorges! I am writing all this for other hikers, but Visorando remains a very good tool that I will always use. Perhaps the technical issue with this hike should be reviewed, as there was a difference when I downloaded it from my favourites.

A beautiful hike, but before you can enjoy the stunning views, you'll have to tackle a steep climb of at least 300 metres right at the start of the hike (take care and make sure you have walking sticks for support!!!)

Very disappointed with this hike, which certainly offers some beautiful views and a lovely crossing of the Pla de Brezou meadow, but which overall should really be called the Galamus undergrowth hike. The forest/undergrowth sections are very long and rather boring, both uphill and downhill, and there are no views of the gorges in five hours.

This route is interesting because of the locations, the famous Galamus Gorges, a mountain range with ridges and valleys, and then the "restful" Pla de Brézou, with its elevation changes, etc. It is therefore very popular, and the start from the car park at the gorges is convenient and clearly visible in the countryside. While your description and the IGN map extract are very useful, even essential, when it comes to the signposting, which you do not wish to comment on, the same cannot be said for the route itself, which is also very popular and an absolutely essential addition. The steep section, with a 300m elevation gain over 700m, which is the most challenging, namely from 1) Abandon... to 2) Recover..., has very few yellow markings and, what's more, these are more visible to the rare hikers who are going in the opposite direction. There are fewer of them because most of the "publicised" routes are, quite rightly, in the same direction as yours. I will be sure to pass on this opinion to the Saint-Paul de Fenouillet tourist office.
