From Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, take the Galamus Gorges road (D7) for 3.5 km (by car).
The hike starts from a car park on the left, before the other car park at L'Ermitage. The Las Ribes car park is quite large and designed for coaches. The hike can also start from the L'Ermitage car park, in which case you will have to walk a little further.
(S/E) From this car park, at an altitude of around 381 m, head down the D7 road for 100 m due east.
(1) At thefirst bend, near a metal barrier, there is a sign pointing towards the GR® and Dulhac on the right-hand pillar. Take the track on the left, which climbs slightly, and join another track at a bend. Follow it to the right for 100 metres.
(2) Don't miss the cairn and the Dulhac sign on the right. Descend and join the GR®36.
Red and white markings forthe GR® 36
(3) Turn left onto a track. Follow the red and white GR®36 markings, which replace the GRP®.
Cross the Four stream, which is often dry (340 m). Continue climbing this fairly steep path (north-east then east).
(4) Arrive at Col de Corbasse (419 m), which you do not cross. Turn left (west then north-west). Continue climbing in hairpin bends.
(5) At 495 m, the path crosses the Ruisseau del Four stream again. At an altitude of 520 m, the path climbs eastwards.
(6) At around 630m, the path opens out into a large clearing. Arrive at Pla de Brézou (around 660m).
Directional signpost, in perfect condition on 24 September 2020, but the information is confusing and incomplete: noGR® 36, Chemin Cathare, Tour des Fenouillèdes... OnlyGR® 367.
Red and white markings forthe GR® 367 (Chemin Cathare) which replaces theGR® P Tour des Fenouillèdes.
(7) Continue left, due west, following the red and white markings. The path remains flat until altitude 665.
Then the ascent through the forest begins. Then, at around 920 m, at the edge of the forest, the path becomes uneven in a rocky environment. You need to be careful and sure-footed, but there is no danger if you stay on the marked path. The very good path leaves this area and becomes more comfortable and relatively flat.
(8) At an altitude of around 905 m, in an area of pebbles and rocks, there are two options:
- climb up to Pech d'Auroux heading due north through one of the many passages through the low vegetation. A few cairns help you find your way.
- alternatively, continue a little further and, facing the cross, head north for a round trip to the summit.
Before reaching the summit (940 m), there is a grassy area sheltered from the wind that is ideal for a picnic.
(9) From the summit, turn around and return to the marked path. Once back on the path, turn right and follow the markings.
"There is a cross embedded in a rock on the other side of the path."
Continue downhill on theGR® 367 trail until you reach a fork at altitude 631.
Red and yellow markings for theGR® P Tour des Fenouillèdes.
(10) Continue left, heading south. The stony path is magnificent and offers a beautiful unobstructed view of the valley and part of the Galamus Gorges. The descent is not easy on these stony paths. Be careful. Return to the D7. Turn right to rejoin the (S/E).
