Description of the walk

Start from Caudiès de Fenouillèdes: leave your car in the car park on the right at the entrance to the village (opposite the tourist office and the Vival grocery store).

(S) Follow the road that leads through the vineyards and fields, marked in yellow (postman’s path). This path is also a variant of the Cathar Trail (GR®367A), which takes you to Duilhac sous Peyrepertuse.
After a short climb, you’ll reach the forest path on the hillside. Follow it until you reach the D20.

(1) Stay on the D20 and leave it after one kilometre to rejoin the path to Prugnanes.

(2) At the entrance to the village, turn left at the corner of the Lodge chez Benjamin, and continue along the track until you reach a descending hairpin bend; be sure to take a narrow path on your left that disappears into the vegetation. You will reach a crossroads of paths at the Col de Lenti.

(3) Head straight ahead and descend the path, which has steps made from logs.
You’ll arrive in the Agly valley, on a tarmac road amidst the vineyards. At the junction, turn left and head back up to the dam on the river at the exit of the Galamus Gorges. This spot at La Tirounère is magnificent.

(4) After the footbridge, head slightly to the left, climbing up the slope. Reach the road, the D7.
Turn right onto it and follow it to the reservoir and car park.

(5) Take the path on your left (just before the wide track that branches off from the bend); this is theGRP® Tour des Fenouillèdes, marked in red and yellow.
The climb is long and steep.

(6) Continue straight ahead on theGR®367(Cathar Trail), ignoring the paths to the right and left.

(7) Pass close to the Roc de Fourcat (stele) before reaching the crossroads at Pla de Brezou, where you’ll find theGR®36as well as theGR®367.

(8) Take it straight ahead and, after a circular route, you’ll reach another junction before the Col de Laprès.

(9) Turn left, leaving theGR® trails here, and head west on a long, almost level stretch. You will reach another crossroads of paths.

(10) Turn left, running parallel to the hamlet of Bac de Merlano, go round the sheepfold and rejoin the GR367.

(11) Turn right and begin a steep descent to reach the D10 at the Moulin de Cubières.

(12) Turn right onto the road to reach the campsite. (E)

Notes

Be careful with water! Outside the villages, water is scarce and livestock grazing may render spring water unfit for consumption.
Beware of the sun. The slope of the climb up Col des Souls faces due south and will certainly be scorching at the slightest hint of sunshine.
Be careful with fire. Do not light campfires; the Mediterranean-type vegetation is highly flammable.

Worth a visit

Don’t miss the Gorges de Galamus and the Saint-Antoine Hermitage.

A lovely hike I did, adapting the route for a bivouac.

Instead of starting the circular return loop, I carried on towards Peyrepertuse Castle (making a total of 23km). I was able to visit it for free on Sunday morning at dawn (I slept at the foot of the castle).
It was a good idea to stop off at the Ermitage Saint Antoine on the hillside. The walk through the Galamus Gorges is brilliant (my mate had a swim there and we had a bite to eat near the footbridge on the way back).

For the return journey from the castle, it’s possible to take a shortcut and avoid the main peak.

A little tip: you can park in the village of Prugnanes. That saves you a 10 km round-trip hike that isn’t particularly interesting.

A lovely, varied walk.
The actual walking time for an average walker is longer than that indicated.
Furthermore, the footbridge leading to point 4 is now open again.

Signposting and signs have been put in place to guide you to St Paul de Fenouillet and avoid the destroyed footbridge.

A very beautiful walk, but please be aware that, following the recent bad weather and the violent flooding of the Agly, the footbridge you need to cross after the dam at the exit of the Gorges de Galamus is impassable. It is impossible to cross the Agly. We had to turn back to Saint Paul de Fenouillet to get to the other side of the river, adding an extra 6 km to our route to get back to the foot of the footbridge. As a result, we cut our walk short by heading straight down to Cubières sur Cinoble from the Col des Souls.
We spent the night at a guesthouse in Cubières (Le Relais du Cinoble). A very warm welcome.
