The Pont de Saint-Georges from Pont-de-Salars

A route that takes you to the wooded, shaded depths of the Viaur valley. The elevation gain is quite significant, but the heritage sites along the way are well worth the effort!

Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Tourist Office car park at Place de la Rivière, head up Avenue de Rodez to the left, following theGR®62and GTML signposts.

(1) At the junction with the Route de Laissac, head up the Rue de l'EDF opposite, then take the Rue de la Coste Vieille. Walk past the secondary school and, at the end of the street, turn left twice.

(2) Carefully cross the D611 road and head down towards La Valette , carefully crossing the D911. There, take a path leading towards the banks of the Viaure

(3) Follow the riverbank along a footpath, then a stony track climbing through the woods to the road to Saint-Georges-de-Camboulas.

(4) Leave theGR®, turn left to reach the oratory and the church, where you can admire the tympanum. To the north is a sarcophagus carved directly into the rock. At the far end of the cemetery, take the path marked in yellow which descends to the Viaur. Paved with schist slabs, it leads to the Pont de Saint-Georges.

(5) Turn left immediately after crossing the bridge. Cross the small stream and take a narrow path that climbs steeply. At the top, with the Roquette farm in view, turn left. After the chestnut trees, the field of ferns offers a lovely view. The path descends steeply through the beech woods to cross the Ruisseau de Bage over stones.

(6) Opposite, climb the winding path which leads to a ridge, passing under a power line.

(7) A wide path with views of Pont-de-Salars and the Bage dam leads straight to the Route de Puech-Ventoux.

(8) Take the path on the left that goes downhill, go round a shed on the left and head down towards the viaduct to pass under the first pier.

(9) Climb back up the other side, then head back down alongside the woods and down the embankment. Follow the path leading to the river and cross the footbridge towards the car park.
On your left, you will find the Place de la Rivière car park (S/E).

A lovely walk, quite shady at the start as you follow the Viaur, then open out towards the end between points 7 and 8.
Picnic near the Saint Georges bridge, but also possible near the church.
We took a wrong turn at point 6, after crossing the Bage stream over the stones,
we continued along it and lost the markings: you need to head up quickly to reach the ridge.
The power line isn’t visible at this point (and even afterwards, we walked underneath it without seeing it, probably hidden by the canopy of trees!)
The most interesting part of the walk is between point 3 and point 6.
The start isn’t very interesting until La Valette (before point 3).
The section between points 8 and 9 isn’t very interesting, as it’s too close to the busy road.

Hello
I have taken note of your route and intend to use a section of it for a planned hike around the Lévézou lakes. Could you confirm whether it is possible to reach the Ferme de la Roquette from the St-Georges bridge via the steep path described from the landmark (5), but which does not pass through this hamlet? Turn left immediately after crossing the bridge. Cross the small stream and take a narrow path that climbs steeply. At the top, with the Roquette farm in sight, turn left.
Wanting to get to Arvieu from Pont-de-Salars, I’ve looked into shortcuts to avoid an overly long stage, which is still quite substantial (21 km) despite this!
I hope to finally be able to make this trip happen in 2022, once the pandemic is behind us! Let’s remain cautious, however
Sporting regards
Pierre11

A lovely walk along the Viaur. The river is beautiful at this time of year. There’s quite a bit of road walking on the way back, but very little traffic.
We really enjoyed the walk.
