Description of the walk

Car park at Place de la Rivière (at the bottom of the village of Pont-de-Salars) near the road bridge over the Viaur.

(S/E) Head straight across the footbridge over the Viaur. Turn left and cross the road bridge. Follow the road to the right and climb the steps on the right, then turn left to rejoin the road to Millau. Follow it for about 300 m until you find the fairly steep drovers' road on your right. Cross the road carefully. You’ll reach the top of the drovers' road.

(1) Cross the D56 carefully and take the path opposite, which passes under the bypass and leads to Alaret (notable oak tree). Follow the small road straight ahead, then quickly take the shaded path that runs above it. Leave theGR®62on your right and continue to the left, on theGRP® (yellow and red markings). Pass the Baraque d’Alaret on your right and you’ll reach the D993.

(2) Take this road to the left, proceeding with caution for about 300 m, pass the slip road leading towards Rodez and take a path to the right before the farm building. At the end, turn left, pass a hairpin bend and follow the tree-lined sunken track, which runs alongside a field before descending to the edge of a beech wood. Cross the Ruisseau des Cadousses and, 100 m from the village of Méjanès, you’ll reach a fork in the road.

(3) Take the hairpin bend to the right and follow the straight track uphill to the Route de Ségur. Follow this to the left and, after 100 m, turn right towards La Gabenie. Pass the farm on your right, continue along the road and take the next track on the left which climbs up to Les Frênes.

(4) At the house, turn right onto the ridge path, cross the Puech de Larzel, continue straight on and keep straight at the next junction. At the road, turn left and head down into Mérican.

(5) At the schist cross, keep left onto the small road that runs alongside the arm of Lac de Pont-de-Salars. You’ll reach the D611 crossroad.

(6) Turn right onto the embankment and follow the road (take care) until you reach the junction for the Chapelle de Salars, signposted on the right. Follow this direction.

(7) You can visit the chapel. Walk past the cemetery and down the sunken path. When you reach the houses, turn right onto a track that runs along the right bank of the Viaur; at the end, cross the Pont du Moulin and you’ll reach the village centre (S/E).

This hike disappointed me. There was almost no view of the lake.
However, it seemed to me that a small change to the route would have remedied this (well, I don't know, maybe)
In addition, there was probably a seasonal issue: no water in the lake, but what can you do...
The chapel cannot be visited as it is locked (which is normal given the thefts).
There are no restrictions on dogs along the hike.
Overall, I was disappointed.

Hello,
I don't understand why the Visorando app classifies this loop as "difficult" when there really isn't any difficulty. Furthermore, according to my records, the distance is 11.116 km with a total elevation gain of 232 m.
The remarkable tree at the Alaret farm is truly superb! I tried to post a photo but I'm not sure if it worked
Best regards

A varied route; a few yellow markings are missing, but it’s easy to follow using the app – perfect. Lovely views and villages.

Hello,
On this route, Visorando calculated the elevation gain; I relied on that estimate. I don’t understand why, if the route is correct, the elevation gain has been calculated incorrectly.
I’ll mention this in the route description as I can’t change the automatically calculated values… Thank you for pointing this out, and I’m sorry if you were disappointed. Have a lovely day. Kind regards,

Check the elevation gain again! I’ve recorded the route and the actual elevation gain is over 450m, whereas you’ve stated it as 180m.
I’d really like to know why! Happy New Year 2024.
