The Chapel of Bergounhoux from Ségur

A walk through varied landscapes that will take you in the footsteps of a Duke of Burgundy, who had lost his way in this area. A kind-hearted pilgrim set him back on the right path to Santiago de Compostela; having arrived safely, the duke had this chapel built in homage to the Virgin Mary, to whom he had prayed here a few weeks earlier.

Description of the walk

Car park at Place de la Fontaine (war memorials).

(S/E) Head towards the D29, cross it and follow it to the right for about a hundred metres.

(1) Leave the road and turn left onto a grassy path that climbs between two houses (follow the red and yellow markings ofthe GRP® Grand Tour Des Monts et Lacs du Lévézou). This path continues as a sunken track leading up to the reservoir. Go round it on the right.

(2) At the T-junction, turn right. Join the D29 and follow it to the left for about 250 m.

(3) At the junction, continue along the small road to the right towards Campels. Ignore the dead-end road on the right leading to Mate Fan and walk alongside the pond below on the right.

(4) At the junction that appears immediately, continue straight on (the track on the right will be the return route).

(5) At Campels, by the wayside shrine, continue to the right along a dirt track, still following theGRP® (red and yellow markings).

(6) After Campels, at the first junction, turn left onto a track, still following the GRP®.

(7) At the next junction, take the sharp right-hand bend. Pass the hamlet of Taury and follow the small road which continues on to Monteillet.

(8) In the centre of Monteillet, take the small road branching off to the right. Head downhill and stay on this road until you reach the small bridge over the Ruisseau de Lacan. Just after the bridge, turn right.

(9) After about a hundred metres, turn right onto the path towards the Chapelle de Bergounhoux.

(10) At the next junction (elevation 829), turn sharply right and climb up to the chapel.

(11) Continue for another 200 m on the GRP®.

(12) Take a sharp left-hand bend. At the first junction, ignore a path branching off to the right and continue straight ahead. Further on, at a junction (elevation 954), turn left.

(13) At the next junction, turn right and continue straight on until you reach the track at elevation 917.

(14) Follow the track to the left. Pass the Lacan farm and continue for another 50 metres or so along the GRP®.

(15) Then turn right and leave theGRP®. Continue along a wide ridge path, leaving the Puech de Lacan on your right. Take in the views of the valley, the Palanges forest and the Lévézou plateau. A long descent down Mate Fan brings you back to the small road you took on the way out.

(4) Then turn left and follow theGRP® in the opposite direction to the outward journey until you reach the D29 in Ségur. Follow the road to the right for about fifty metres and you will find the starting point on the left (S/E).

To avoid having to drive back and forth to Segur, I set off from point 3, where there’s plenty of parking, and the length of the circular route is reduced to 12.2 km

A lovely walk in the Lévezou region along wide paths, under sunny skies and a blue sky that offered stunning views of the Cantal mountain range (Le Plomb and Le Puy Grillou), the Aubrac and the Lacaune mountains.
Thanks to the hiker.
