The Moulin d'Angibault from Montipouret

This walk, at the gateway to the southern Boischaut, allows you to explore the surroundings of Montipouret via pleasant country lanes and small rural roads, amidst the bocage landscapes that George Sand called the Vallée Noire. In her social novel, *Le meunier d’Angibault*, she describes the beautiful Moulin d’Angibault. You can admire it halfway along the route, along with its bucolic grounds surrounded by the Vauvre.

Description of the walk

Start from the Place de l'Église in Montipouret.

(S/E) Take the D69 towards Saint-Chartier and follow the yellow markings.

(1) At Les Grenouillères, turn left into a cul-de-sac that leads onto a grassy path, then turn right.

(2) At the cross, carefully cross the D69 to continue along the path opposite and carry on straight ahead until you reach a small road. Turn left, then take a sharp right at Liennets. At the next three-way junction, take the road on the left and head for the next turn-off on the left.

(3) Turn onto the path on the left, pass one on the right, then turn right at the next one. Pass two paths on the left and cross a small road, continuing straight on until you reach a fork.

(4) Take the path on the right, cross a road and follow another small road opposite, then turn onto a path on the right.

(5) Once on the D49, follow it carefully to the right for 50 m, then take a path on the left that runs alongside a ditch (signpost). The path widens and becomes Rue du hameau du Montet; follow this for 100 m.

(6) Go down the path on the left, then take the small road on the left to the Pont de l'Aubray and the access road to the Moulin d'Angibault.

(7) Turn left and take a moment to admire the mill and its surroundings.

(8) Retrace your steps.

(7) Take the small road on the left again, crossing the Pont de l'Aubray.

(9) At the crossroads, take the access road opposite leading to the recycling bins and continue along a farm track to the left. Turn left onto a grassy path and follow it until you reach a tarmac road.

(10) Turn right onto this road to reach the Maison des Chaumes, which you pass on the left along a track. Cross the small road and turn right onto a grassy track. Then turn left.

(11) Follow the small road to the right, pass Les Broquets and carefully cross the D41 to continue straight ahead. After passing over La Vauvre, the small road straightens out and leads to the D49.

(12) Turn left and follow the main road carefully for about 400 m. Turn left onto Rue des Combattants d'AFN. After a right-hand bend, continue straight on at the following junctions until you reach Allée Jacques Deschamps (pedestrian-only), which you should take to the right to return to the church car park (S/E).

A very beautiful walk!
I didn't encounter any walkers or hikers, but it was 26 February 2026, a Thursday, after many days of rain that made me fear the paths would be too muddy! There were two or three flooded sections, but we were able to climb up the embankment or take a field that bordered the path.
The path is marked in yellow, and at each intersection I found a yellow wooden arrow.
There is a small section that I didn't do and therefore didn't see, but I'll be back!
I started from the DA church and followed the route in the suggested direction, from 1 to 9. There, I took the D41 and followed it until I rejoined the suggested route.
I was really delighted!

A lovely walk, but at this time of year the paths aren’t maintained at all, with very tall grass all along the way. So it’s difficult to walk.

There was thick fog this morning in early February, followed by blue skies and sunshine; there was no one else on the trail, which meant we were able to spot some deer, a fox and a few birds. As mentioned in the description, it’s damp, but it’s lovely – especially the first half, which is entirely on footpaths.
