Between the Gourdon and the Bouzanne

According to legend, Lys-Saint-Georges owes its name to Philip Augustus and Richard the Lionheart, who are said to have reconciled in this village. Combining the Lily of France and Saint George, the patron saint of England, we get Lys-Saint-Georges. Its 14th-century castle, the remains of an ancient fortified castle with eleven towers, was restored and then altered in the 19th century. This castle belonged to Bertrand du Lys and was purchased in 1430 by Jacques Cœur. It has belonged to the Count of Reviers for over a century.

Description of the walk

Park near the church.

(S/E) Head west, walk past the church on your left and head down towards the Gourdon. Cross the D69 and continue along the gently sloping path on the left, leaving the cross on your right. Follow this path down, passing to the right of the water treatment plant, until you reach the Chemin de la Marzelle, also known as the Chemin des Moines.

(1) Turn left, leaving the leprosarium on your right, and follow the Gourdon for about 600 m. Turn right and cross the small bridge over the Gourdon.

(2) After the climb, turn left onto the D69A for about 200 m, then turn right onto a grassy sunken track. At the end of this track, turn right onto the D74 and follow this road for about 500 m.

(3) Turn left towards La Génitère. Once you reach the hamlet, follow a small road downhill to the right. Then turn left onto a grassy track and you’ll come out onto the D69.

(4) Turn right towards Le Plessis. About 100 m before the Le Plessis crossroads, turn left onto a grassy track to join the D74. Turn left and follow this road to the La Gravette junction.

(5) Turn left onto the tarmac road known as Chemin des Gravettes. After the descent and just past the farm on your left, turn right and follow the path (Chemin de Buxières) which leads to the banks of the Bouzanne. Follow the river until you reach the junction (pile of gravel).

(6) Turn right. After the climb, at the hamlet of Le Rocher, keep right onto the tarmac road and join the D74.

(7) Turn right onto the road.

(5) Carry straight on along a section of the route already taken on the way out.

(8) Turn left and take the Chemin des Noyers, which will lead you to the hamlet of La Bourse. Turn left onto the D69, cross the Gourdon bridge and, as you pass, take a look at the leper colony at a place called L’Hôpital. Continue along this road until you reach the sign for the Blue and Green trails.

(9) Take the path on the left, following these dual markings. The path bends to the right and heads west-north-west; keep in this direction. At the junction, ignore the Blue and Green markings which head off to the right and continue straight ahead.

(10) Head almost straight on along the Chemin des Garennes, following it until you reach the Chemin de Fondeville.

(11) Turn right, then right again onto the D69. Pass Le Carroir and keep left onto Rue du Château, which leads directly to the square and the church (S/E).

We discovered a part of Lys-Saint-Georges that we hadn’t seen before
The bocage is superb and so well-preserved, with its intact hedges, an abundance of oak trees, small plots of land and, the icing on the cake, a herd of ‘Normande’ calves in a meadow – the likes of which we haven’t seen in ages
If only our Boischaut were like this everywhere, we’d have no trouble creating a Regional Nature Park
One small reservation about the signposting after Le Rocher on the D74: we could have turned right at La Gravette instead of taking the left turn towards La Bourse further on (we had neither a map nor a mobile phone)
Thank you for this lovely discovery

Hello.
It’s true that the signage isn’t in place yet.
We have fallen behind schedule with the production of the signs. They are currently being made.
Nevertheless, we have posted the walk on Visorando so that walkers can enjoy it right away.

A lovely route, beautiful autumn colours, clean, and a wonderful historical heritage.
Just one small downside: the route isn’t marked in red (as stated in the description).
At the start and for about 2 km, it is red and white, then there are no markings apart from yellow
in a few places, with green and blue markings clearly visible towards the end.
You have to rely on the route description; it’s very reliable.
A truly lovely walk, thank you!
