The Margériaz circular loop on snowshoes

The Margériaz mountain is equipped for downhill skiing. However, its ridges are accessible on snowshoes, offering a pleasant route that partly bypasses the snow stadium and provides magnificent views. The open terrain allows for a unique approach by moonlight.

Description of the walk

Access from Chambéry via the Col des Prés. 3 km after Aillon-le-Jeune, turn left onto the road to the Stade de Neige du Margériaz until you reach Car Park No. 1.

(S/E) Head north parallel to the Ptiou magic carpet, then descend and follow the edge of the Piste des Gentianes to continue straight north-west along the Piste de la Forêt to the circular cross-country ski loop. Turn left to follow this and, when it turns north-east, continue along a forest path to reach the bottom of the Piste noire du Lynx.

(1) Head back up this piste along one of its edges until you reach the end of the groomed section (platform).

(2) Turn left to cross level with the Biolles ski lift ascent and join the Mur des Biolles run, which you follow straight up to the summit (ski lift top).

(3) Near the ridge, a path branches off parallel to it towards the south-west; follow it along the contour line with gentle ascents and descents. Shortly after the Golet ski lift terminus, a short climb to the right leads to one of the highest points of Margériaz.

(4) Return to the track heading south and reach the summit, at an elevation of 1,798 metres, which is clearly visible.

(5) From this summit, the route follows the ‘Les Crêtes’ snowshoe trail markers. Head eastwards, following the grassy ridge line in summer. It gradually veers south-eastwards as it descends, passing close to landforms typical of Margériaz.

(6) At around 1,650 m, the trail leaves the ridge and turns left towards the resort (north-east). Follow the undulating ridges to the edge of La Bergerie, which you leave on your left.

(7) Head straight towards the forest to follow the marked trail, which continues to descend north-eastwards to the Tanne aux Cochons area (a few metres from the marked track).

(8) Do not turn right towards La Tanne au Névé and La Place à Baban, but continue in the same direction through the forest. The route gradually veers to the left to reach the bottom of the Piste des Coqs and the foot of the Ambruniers ski lift.
Avoid heading down towards the sled dog farm (car park no. 2), but cross level towards the resort buildings and the car park (S/E).

Notes

The first half of the circular route runs alongside cross-country or downhill ski runs: it is best to take this route when the ski lifts are not bringing in large numbers of skiers: for example, early in the morning before opening, or out of season, or at night in the moonlight (see photo report).

From the summit of Margériaz (4), pedestrians are permitted (marked ‘l’Echappade’); from the 1,798 m summit (5), the route is reserved for pedestrians and snowshoers.

''Alternative ascent route: if the Lynx and Biolles trails are busy and therefore dangerous to use on snowshoes, the ascent to the ridge can be made via a ski touring route (La "Marge") passing to the east of the Lynx trail and rising from the circular cross-country loop to the ridge. However, this winding route is not always clearly marked.

Alternative descent: conversely, if there are no longer any skiers (in the evening, for example), the descent from La Bergerie (7) can follow the blue Coqs trail, which is quicker than the route through the forest.

Worth a visit

The views are sweeping from the ridge:
- glimpses towards La Féclaz and Le Revard, Le Nivolet and Chambéry below,
- panoramic views of the Bauges (Trélod, Colombier, Arclusaz, Galoppaz...), Mont Blanc, Belledonne, the Chartreuse...

A few geological features to look out for along the way: natural arch, tannes...

In fact, the route described is no longer done on snowshoes but on touring skis (or with crampons, as I did); I only saw one person on the way up; however, the route is busy on the way down; the views along the entire ridge are exceptional,

We went on this hike outside the school holidays, so there weren’t many people around. Whether you’re wearing snowshoes or crampons, it’s a lovely hike above the clouds, offering magnificent views of the Chartreuse, the Vercors, the Ecrins, Belledonne, the Aravis and Mont Blanc.
Thanks to the author for this hike!

A lovely hike done with crampons, but snowshoes would have been better, especially in the afternoon for the descent.
The snow was soft.
Otherwise, lovely views of the surrounding mountain ranges (Aravis, Beaufortain, Belledonne and Chartreuse).
I highly recommend it

A lovely route, which we set out to tackle on a snowshoe hike, but as the snow turned out to be quite hard, crampons were sufficient. Highly recommended for a hike of less than four hours, and what’s more, it offers a stunning 360° view.

A lovely walk with stunning views all the way up, but especially from the summit.
For the ascent, we left the “La Forêt” track just after the orange barriers on the right to take the start of the “La Marge” hiking track opposite, which takes us on a lovely climb through the forest almost to point No. 3. After that, the route is straightforward.

Hello. Everything here is ‘very’ something: very, very, very busy (downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing; huge car parks packed full). (Note that this was a SUNDAY in January with SNOW and SUNSHINE). Very, very well organised, with particular attention paid to the little ones.

We did the route in the direction suggested by the author: a very, very steep climb with a steep slope (but I’d rather climb this slope than go down it…). All the elevation gain mentioned is covered here.

The setting: here, it goes from ‘very’ to sublime! Views of the mountains almost constantly; on the Margériaz ridges, it’s the icing on the cake: a 360° view of the mountains and plains on either side of the ridge. It’s indescribably beautiful...

Many thanks for this absolutely lovely post.....
