The Grand Wintersberg and the Celtic camp at Ziegenberg

A pleasant forest trail that leads without much effort to the highest point in the Northern Vosges, where a tower built at the end of the 19th century offers extensive panoramic views. Less popular, the Celtic camp site is not without charm.

Description of the walk

Departure from Col de la Liese (Club Vosgien chalet). The pass is accessible via a narrow forest road that can be taken from the D1062, either near the Celtic mineral water factory in Niederbronn or at the Riesthal forest house, after Philippsbourg when coming from Bitche.

Blue Ring trail markers

(S/E) Head west and take a flat path between two small tarmac roads, the one that climbs directly to the summit (on the left) and the one that descends towards Riesthal and Bitche (on the right). Stay on this good path, which follows the contour line, through beech and fir forests, ignoring a few side paths. At a fork (plot no. 59), take the path on the left.

Red Cross markings
On the first part of the following section, the purple route on the 1:25,000 map is inaccurate. The route follows my GPS track and is consistent with the OSM base map.

(1) At the crossroads that appears shortly afterwards (bench), take the path on the left that leads to the Grand Wintersberge viewpoint. Climb up a few switchbacks in the fir forest. Continue on a less steep or completely flat path along the wooded ridge. Further on, the path gives way to a wider track that leads to the summit with its prominent tower.

Red rectangle markings

(2) With your back to the tower entrance, go straight ahead (i.e. to the right of the path you came up) and leave the antennas on your left. Descend the numerous switchbacks (handrails, wooden steps) to reach a wide perpendicular path.

(3) Cross the path and continue straight ahead towards the Celtic camp. Descend the steep slope.

Red-white-red rectangle markings

(4) At a crossroads at the bottom of the descent, go straight ahead towards the Celtic camp. Cross a beautiful beech forest dotted with small rocks and descend slightly. At a fork not shown on the IGN map, continue straight ahead and climb a hillock on which you can see the remains of a low wall. Cross this wall and cross a small chaotic area of small rocks and felled trees that have not yet been cleared (situation in February 2021). You will reach a sign indicating the Celtic Camp and a viewpoint.

(5) Retrace your steps and descend the hill. Continue north towards Wintersberg and climb gently through the beech forest.

Red rectangle markings

(4) At the crossroads, go straight ahead. After a few dozen metres, at a fork, take the right-hand path and climb a short steep hill.

Blue ring markings

(3) At the crossroads you took on the way up, follow the horizontal path to the right towards Col de la Liese. Stay on this wide path, ignoring a few steep tracks on the left and several paths on the right. This will take you to Col de la Liese (S/E).

Notes

The sections marked with the Anneau Bleu (Blue Ring) are on very good paths where good sports shoes are sufficient. The other sections are steeper and rockier.

No water sources were found along the route.

The forest road leading to the Col de la Liese from the D1062 is closed to traffic at night, on Sundays and on public holidays.

A detailed map is useful (at least the one accompanying this description).

Worth a visit

During the hike:
- Pleasant paths through beautiful beech forests.
- Tower built in 1889-1890 at the summit of the Grand Wintersberg (2), 25 m high and offering extensive panoramic views.
- Celtic camp (5): remains of a small stone enclosure around the summit of Ziegenberg, dating from pre-Roman times.
- Ziegenberg viewpoint (5).

Nearby:
History buffs can explore the site of the Battle of Reichshoffen, which took place on 6 August 1870 on the territory of the two neighbouring municipalities of Frœschwiller and Wœrth.

A nice little walk, not quite as easy as it looks with some climbs; certainly not excessively long, but quite steep.
The only slight downside is the section leading to the Celtic camp, as you have to go back the same way, but perhaps there’s no other option and it would be a shame to miss it.

A walk that follows the description exactly, with no major difficulties.
Stunning views from the top of the Wintersberg tower.
It’s a shame there’s no information about the Celtic camp on the site.

There is not much of a view during the walk, except from the top of the tower.
Ideal when the sun is shining, as much of the walk takes place in the woods.

Lovely walk along some very pleasant paths. Surprising climb up to the Wintersberg tower (you need a light from your telephone to see clearly on the stairs). We didn't make the return trip to the Celtic camp. There was a Club Vosgien chalet at the starting point for refreshments and tables available in the shelter for a picnic break.

Very nice hike. I fell on the day of a Vosges club meeting at the chalet, so the route was very busy. But it must be quieter and really pleasant in normal times.

Very pleasant hike, very well explained
Positively astonished to be able to climb the steps of the Tour du Wintersberg with a very nice view from up there, but the stairs are very narrow and you have to avoid passing anyone.
Nice picnic area and children's play area at point S/E with swings, turnstile, etc.
Time taken: 1 hour 55 minutes, taking time to breathe on the climbs and having climbed the tower and made a few stops!

A very pleasant walk in very hot weather
Magnificent views from the Winterberg tower.
It's a shame there's no explanation of the Celtic camp.

The route I recorded was offset at times from the circuit marked in red. The walk is not difficult and the views from the top of the Wintersberg tower and the Celtic camp are sublime. The times set are correct, and stops are taken into account. The only drawback is at the Celtic camp, where some explanation of the site would be welcome.

We enjoyed this tour because of the different landscapes we encountered. Our only regret was that the Celtic camp was overgrown with uprooted trees due to the recent gales in the region. The viewpoint was difficult to access and the site difficult to see in its entirety. But it was a nice walk all the same.
