Route des cinq châteaux vers Windstein

Northern Alsace is renowned for its castles. This route allows you to explore five of them: Nouveau and Vieux Windstein, Wittschloessel, Wineck and Schoeneck. A detour also allows you to see the ‘Man’s Rock’ and ‘Woman’s Rock’, as well as a magnificent view over Dambach and Neunhoffen. This is a walk that constantly alternates between ascents and descents through the forest, some easier than others. Only the section towards Dambach is flat.

A lovely walk, with easy-to-follow paths and tracks; one section was a bit monotonous (14–15). We took a shortcut before point 16, turning right onto a path that runs behind the houses. However, if you continue straight on for 50 metres, there were some flags (perhaps related to the Maginot Line?). After point 16, you must cross the bridge and take the path on the left immediately after the bridge. (If you take the path before crossing the bridge, you’ll follow the signs, but the small bridge further on is unusable).
Further on, we took a small path on the right, the Maginot Line path, which is nicer than staying on the main track.
It’s suitable for dogs, but there aren’t many places for them to drink along the route.
Thank you for this walk

A superb hike! The trails are in good condition and fairly easy to follow. Be warned, though: it takes 5½ hours and my GPS watch recorded 24km with 1,047 metres of elevation gain!

The section from Dambach back to the starting point isn’t the most interesting part, but it’s still pretty and enjoyable in places… you’ve got to get back at some point. It’s possible to shorten the route, particularly around Dambach, by heading straight back to the starting point. I’d still recommend doing the circular route, though – even though it’s quite a climb, the view is lovely.

Note: for this distance and elevation gain, you need to set off with the basic essentials (rucksack, water, snacks, hiking boots, a fully charged phone, etc.).

Hello, we’re thinking of going on this hike – is it suitable for a large dog? Are there any sections involving climbing or ladders?
Thank you for your reply.
