Take Rue Charles Mathis, go under the D1062 bridge and join Chemin du Roi de Rome to park on the grassy area at the side.
(S/E) From the signpost at the side of the path, take the track which runs alongside the D1062 for 100 m and climbs to the right into the forest.
GR® 53 Red Rectangle
(1) The path is quite steep and crosses two forest tracks, widening as it reaches the ruined castle of Wasenbourg and the Roman watchtower.
(2) After visiting these historic sites, walk round the castle and follow the Wasenberg Forest Path for about 100 metres before turning left onto the Charles Mathis Trail or discovery trail, which winds its way up the Reiseberg hill – a site of archaeological research – to the Hexenplätzel and on to the Kreuztannen crossroads (picnic area).
(3) Continue towards Wasenkoepfel, Ungerthal and Arnsberg to reach the Wasenkoepfel tower, built by the Club Vosgien and now overshadowed by the forest trees.
(4) Continue towards the Ungerthal Pass to find a picnic area and a shelter at the crossroads.
(5) The forest path descends to the Holdereck Pass.
(6) Climb towards the Grunschaft crossroads (picnic). Continue along the forest path, which descends steeply in places, to the ruins of Grand Arnsbourg Castle, built on a sandstone outcrop.
End ofthe GR® 53 and Red Triangle markings.
(7) Walk around the castle.
(7) Head north towards Niederbronn Breittenwasen (turn left when returning from the walk around the castle, or right if you have not done the walk). The forest track descends to a junction. Continue along the path on the left and reach the Col du Schlangenthal (picnic).
(8) Continue down the forest road towards Leitzelthal. At a fork, keep right to reach a crossroads at the northern end of the pond.
(Yellow Triangle markings)
(9) Take the sharp right-hand bend onto the path (unwooded area), then follow the flat path until you reach Rue Breitenwasen, bordered on the left by the Falkesteinerbach stream, and continue to the Chapel of Our Lady of Wasenberg.
(10) After visiting the chapel, continue along Rue de la Chapelle and then Rue du Martinet to the car park (S/E).
