Loop of the 5 castles

This hike in the Northern Vosges will allow you to discover five castles which, although less well known than Fleckenstein, are just as worthy of a visit! Much of the walk takes place on small forest paths, making it very pleasant in hot weather.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the foot of Schoeneck Castle on the D53 between Wineckerthal and Obersteinbach.

(S/E) Cross the road and head right, following the Green Triangle signs.

(1) After just over 200 m, cross the D53, continuing to follow the Green Triangle signs to Winerckerthal.

(2) Take the road on the right (south-east) for 500 m, following the Red RectangleGR®®53signposting which leads up to the Château du Nouveau Windstein.
Note: From the hamlet of "Gruenenthal", turn left and follow the Yellow Diamond markings to climb up to the castle.

(3) Head back down the other side towards the second Windstein.

(4) Pass by the Auberge des Deux Châteaux, following the Yellow Diamond markings which lead to Vieux Windstein.

(5) Follow the Red Rectangle markings leading to the Col du Gruenthal.

(6) Continue uphill and then downhill.

(7) Pass the Petit Grueneberg Pass and reach the Wineckerthal Pass.

(8) Follow the Red Rectangle markings on the left towards the Wittschloessel Ruins. After 400 m, take the path on the right marked with Red-White-Red Rectangles, which leads up to the Wittschloessel Ruins.

(9) Descend via the same path and continue straight ahead following the Red Rectangle markings until the first junction. Then follow the Yellow Triangle along the forest track. You will reach a hairpin bend.

(10) Follow the Yellow Disc, pass the Col du Wineck and continue on to reach Wineck Castle.

(11) Stay on the Yellow Disc markings to descend into the valley and turn right onto the path running alongside the D53 road. Return to the initial crossroads passed on the way out.

(1) Return to the car park (S/E).

(S/E) Now follow the Green Triangle-marked path opposite, which takes the tarmac road to the left. When you reach the pond, take the path on the right which climbs towards Schoeneck Castle, following the Green Triangle markings.

(12) Head back down the path, marked with Green Triangles, to return to the Schoeneck car park (S/E).

As always, the route was flawless – a lovely hike with stunning views and castles.
Nothing to complain about; a lovely Vosges Club hut where you can enjoy a meal in the shelter at the Col de Wittschoessel.
Definitely worth doing again,

The start was a bit confusing, with the yellow diamond markings missing. But afterwards, it was a very nice walk, with some beautiful castles to discover.

Many thanks for this route, which I loved!
Lots of forest and points of interest (castles) along the way. Some nice climbs to get the heart pumping a bit, and a lot of fun all the way!
Not a very busy route, it was Easter weekend and the weather was wonderful, so there were more people on the paths! But it was all lovely people with whom I often exchanged a few words.
MAGNIFICENT ROUTE!

A beautiful walk combining nature and history. Discovering the castles is a real bonus and each one deserves to be seen.
The route of the walk has been changed somewhat, but the markings are easy to follow. If you know the names of the castles to follow, you'll find your way around very easily.
There are a few busy stretches and some steep climbs to bear in mind.

A very beautiful parish specific to Brittany, under the trees, and discover its castles in the rocks.
Don't do as I did, towards the end of the hike, you have to continue it by passing over the starting car park. To see the last castle there.

The route points are very approximate.
This is particularly annoying for points at intersections and changes of direction.

Magnificent route, a bit of a drive at the start but the rest of the route is really stimulating with its ruined castles and viewpoints.

Very nice walk, which unfortunately started off on the wrong foot as we had to walk on the road. 50 per cent of it was paths and the rest was wide. We didn't find Windstein by following the route with the app.
Otherwise great satisfaction in discovering the ruins. Especially going through the cave.
Personally, I would have started at the last castle and then continued on the long loop.

A very fine walk, easy enough for regular hikers. The gradient is well distributed and there are few "walls". However, access to the old Windstein is impossible in May due to protected bird nesting.
Be careful if you follow the GPX route, it is sometimes wrong, whereas the description based on the markings of the Club Vosgien is just perfect.
