Start from the small car park along the D1091 at the entrance to the village of La Grave (between Grenoble and Briançon).
(S/E) Leave the car park and walk 50 m uphill towards Grenoble until you reach a street branching off to the left (towards the village).
(1) Take this street, passing La Gravelotte campsite, then further on, passing beneath the cable car cables. At the bridge over the River Romanche, take the path on the left which climbs up to the village. The path is fitted with iron steps. Climb up to the La Meije Glaciers cable car station.
(2) Leave the car park and head up towards the village centre. Cross the road (D1091) and walk up to the church. Continue uphill for a few metres to join theGR®®54.
(3) On leaving the village, follow the sign for “Chemin du Facteur”. This path is adorned with “postage stamps” featuring painted flowers (throughout the walk, these paintings show you the right direction and are a delight to look at).
(4) Atthe third bend, continue uphill, taking the path on the left, and climb up to the hamlet of Les Terrasses. Walk uphill through the hamlet, past the church, then turn left. TheGR®®54crosses the road (RD 33) twice and reaches the Col des Portes, where the Chazelet wayside shrine is located.
(5) From the oratory, there is a splendid view of the Meije massif. An orientation board is situated on the promontory above the road. Just past the small Chazelet Oratory, the Perchoir de l’Oratory du Chazelet is a viewing platform (a cliff-top vantage point overlooking the glaciers) from which you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view of the valley. Entry is free.
Head towards Le Chazelet by road to visit this charming hamlet.
(6) Return along the path in the opposite direction to reach La Grave (S/E).
