La Baraque de la Buffe at the start of Le Chazelet

This is an easy walk, mainly on paved or unpaved tracks (some are necessary), which nevertheless offers constant views of the Meije massif, wide open spaces around you, and a bright route rich in discoveries.
What's more, this route is ideal for Nordic walking.

Description of the walk

If you are leaving from La Grave, heading towards Lautaret, take the road on the right just after the tunnel towards "Le Chazelet - Station ski". The road passes over the tunnel again; leave the village of Ventelon on your right and cross Les Terrasses; When you reach the entrance to Le Chazelet, leave the village on your left (you will not be passing through it) and take the road that goes around it on the right, overlooking it. You will arrive at the exit of the village, where you can park either on the descent towards it or at the beginning of the road that continues towards the ski lift station, which is what we did.

(S/E) Head towards the village, descending 250 metres, and just after the chalet-poubelles, take a hairpin turn to the right towards the Emparis plateau on theGR®54(white and red markings).
Walk for 250 metres to reach a Y-junction.

(1) Leave theGR®54on your left towards the Emparis plateau and turn right towards the Shepherds' Yurt and the Pic du Mas de la Grave. You will soon reach another Y-junction.

(2) Leave the track that continues towards Les Rivets on your right and descend to the left towards the stream, which you cross via a bridge lined with wooden railings, just next to a house by the water. You are now on the track, which you can follow without risk of going wrong. Cross the Ruisseau de Bernes and you will then arrive at the Ruisseau des Combettes.
Bear right to follow the latter and reach the fords of the Torrent du Gâ.

(3) Ford the stream and turn left onto the track towards the Buffe chalets.
After 900m, the track fords the bed of a large tributary of the Gâ and passes in front of a sheepfold in the middle of a cattle gathering area.
400m further on, you pass near some yurts, then cross a small hamlet of old stone huts. Continue for 600m and cross another ford to arrive in front of the Buffe hut.

(4) From the Buffe hut, head back in the opposite direction on the track towards the south-east and you will come to the fork in the tracks.

(3) Leave the ford you crossed earlier on your right and continue along the same track. You will reach the track above the Croix du Tuf.

(5) Continue along the track towards Le Chazelet, and after crossing a thalweg, you will pass the hamlets of Rivet de la Cime, Rivet du Milieu and Rivet du Pied in succession.
After a bend in the track, take the path on the left that leads directly to the cross at the edge of the track below, cutting across a large hairpin bend.
From the cross, the path continues and cuts across another bend in the track to lead directly to the Pertus bridge, which you cross. Shortly afterwards, you will come to the crossroads of the circular you passed on the way there.

(2) Follow the same route as on the way out to return to the Chazelet car park (S/E).

Notes

As this route is mainly on trails, mountain boots are not essential. A pair of good walking shoes or trainers is perfectly adequate.
I would also recommend this route as a Nordic walking route: the quality of the tracks, the reasonable elevation gain and the moderate slopes allow for a good stride length and good progress.
Numerous small streams line the route, and in the hamlets of Les Rivets, captured springs provide very drinkable water.

Worth a visit

Between (2) and (3) This entire section is on a balcony, offering permanent views of La Meije to the south, the mountain pastures and heights of Goléon, and to the north, the Pic du Mas de la Grave in the line of sight.

Between (3) and (4) We are in an active pastoral environment and in the upper Gâ valley, which widens out, whereas further south it is a gorge.

Between (3) and (5) The trail is never boring as it overlooks the Gâ, which flows through a gorge here.

Between (5) and (2) We pass through the intimate atmosphere of the three hamlets of Les Rivets, where we can appreciate the typical regional architecture. We take the time to admire the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua.

There is an alternative route for the return journey, climbing 200 m up the Courbeille torrent valley to the Pic du Mas de la Grave refuge, where you will find a balcony path that runs parallel to the track 80 m higher up, passing through the hamlets of Petite Buffe and Chabanerie, then, after crossing another thalweg, the hamlet of Les Orliers, before returning to the track at the Croix de Tuf.

For further hikes from Le Chazelet, you can also climb up to the Emparis plateau, the Signal de la Grave, and Lac du Goléon, among other destinations.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A bit of a cow mountain on the way there, whereas the view of La Meige is so beautiful on the way back.
As already mentioned, there is no shade, even at the Buffe hut

Magnificent panorama. Very pleasant and easy route. The highlight is the refuge at the Pic du Mas de la Grave, where you can stop for a tasty snack.

Ah, @FARGE JANETTE, perhaps it would be useful for me to specify in the description that there are no trees on the course?

Very beautiful hike with sublime landscapes.
We saw lots of vultures. No difficulty at all, even with children.
Set off early because it gets very hot at the bottom of the valley and there is no shade.

It's a pretty cool walk, but don't set off too late because if it's hot, you'll be at the bottom of the valley.

A very beautiful walk with numerous fords, some of them quite deep, but with good footwear, no problems.
The penultimate ford before La Baraque was being filled in on the way there; when I came back, it was finished and there was a path!
The balcony trail starting from the Pic du Mas de la Grave refuge, which was a little difficult to find (but the people at the refuge were there to give us directions), was superb.

I see that, like me, you have been moved by the beauty of this mountain that dominates the entire valley. It is a marvel and a constant delight for the eyes.
