N.B. The names on the IGN maps leave me puzzled. The road from Toulouse to Carcassonne, which everyone in the region calls ‘the 113’, has different numbers on the map. It is the D6113 in the countryside and becomes the D813 as you enter Avignonet-Lauragais. I will refer to it as the D113 in the description below.
Coming from Carcassonne via the D113, as soon as you enter Avignonet-Lauragais you will find the road to Port-Lauragais on your left. Cross the railway line, the motorway and the bridge over the Canal du Midi. As soon as you leave the bridge, turn left and 600m further on enter the Port-Lauragais car park.
(S/E) As you leave the car park, turn right onto the road you have just followed by car. Head towards the canal bridge and then the motorway bridge.
(1) Cross this bridge and continue along the road for 200m.
(2) Take the hairpin bend to the right and continue along this road which runs alongside a large lake. You will reach Rosel.
(3) The road shown on the map is blocked by the owners. Turn left in front of the house on the right and go between the two buildings to continue on your way. Follow this road, cross the railway line and continue to the D113.
(4) Please note that this is a major road and there is traffic.
Take it to the right for about a hundred metres and turn left onto a road that goes uphill. This road leads to Montferrand. Walk through the lower part of the village, continuing along the road. At the T-junction, turn right.
(5) The road continues as a grassy tractor track which also follows theGR®653, marked in red and white, and which is the Way of St James. After the Saint-Pierre-d'Alzonne cemetery, you’ll return to the tarmac and head down to the D113. Cross the road and, keeping slightly to the right, continue along the road. It turns into a grassy track leading to the Canal du Midi.
(6) Turn right along the canal, leaving theGR®®653here. A fairly wide and very well-maintained path runs alongside the canal. We prefer the old towpath, which runs 2 or 3 metres closer to the canal. You may then be lucky enough to spot a few mallards. Pass under the railway line and the motorway. Continue to the canal bridge.
(1) Cross the bridge and turn left onto the road you came along to reach the car park (S/E)
