N.B. The names on the IGN maps leave me wondering. The road from Toulouse to Carcassonne, which everyone in the region calls "the 113", has different numbers on the map. It is the D6113 in the countryside and becomes the D813 when entering Avignonet-Lauragais. I will refer to it as the D113 in the description below.
Coming from Carcassonne on the D113, as soon as you enter Avignonet-Lauragais, you will find the road to Port-Lauragais on your left. Pass the railway line, the motorway and the bridge over the Canal du Midi. As soon as you leave the bridge, turn left and 600 metres further on, enter the Port-Lauragais car park.
(S/E) When you leave the car park, turn right onto the road you just drove along. Continue to the canal bridge and the motorway bridge.
(1) Cross this bridge and continue along the road for 200 metres.
(2) Take the sharp right turn and continue along this road, which runs alongside a large lake. Continue to Rosel.
(3) The road on the map is blocked by the owners. Turn left in front of the house on the right and pass between the two buildings to continue on your way. Continue along this road, cross the railway line and continue to the D113.
(4) Please note that this road is a major thoroughfare and there is heavy traffic.
Turn right and follow it for about 100 metres, then turn left onto an uphill road. This road will take you to Montferrand. Continue along the road through the lower part of the village. At the T-junction, turn right.
(5) The street continues along a grassy tractor track, which is also marked with red and white signs for theGR®653, the Way of St James. After the Saint-Pierre-d'Alzonne cemetery, you will rejoin the tarmac road and descend to the D113. Cross over and continue along the road, keeping slightly to the right. It turns into a grassy track until you reach the Canal du Midi.
(6) Turn right along the canal, leaving theGR®653here. A fairly wide and well-maintained path runs alongside the canal. We prefer the old towpath, which runs 2 or 3 metres closer to the canal. You may be lucky enough to see a few mallards. Pass under the railway line and the motorway. Continue to the canal bridge.
(1) Cross the bridge and turn left onto the road you came from to reach the car park (S/E).
