The Blauen from the Egerten car park

A pleasant walk through the forest. It’s still a bit of a climb to reach the summit of the Blauen. Follow the Westweg Red Diamond route to the Blauen on the way up; the return is via an unmarked path and then the Yellow Diamond route. The view is magnificent. Sometimes the weather is fine up there whilst it is overcast in the valley, with the Blauen emerging from a sea of clouds. At other times, the view stretches far across the Rhine plain, the Jura, the Alps and the Vosges.

Description of the walk

Egerten car park on the L140 between Malsburg-Marzell and Badenweiler. Park on the left when coming from Malsburg-Marzell.

(S/E) From the car park, take the wide Red Diamond Westweg path towards Blauen, running parallel to the road, then immediately turn right onto a footpath and follow the Red Diamond signs towards Blauen. Go round the south side of the Stockberg. At the two inverted Y-junctions, continue straight ahead; at the next Y-junction, turn right and you will reach the Stockberg signpost.

(1) Turn slightly left, then keep right at the “Y” junction, and cross the next crossroads. At the inverted “Y” junction, continue straight ahead. Stay on the Red Diamond Westweg trail towards Blauen.

(2) First turn left then right, then at the next Y-junction turn right, and at the end of the path turn left to join the access road to Blauen.

(3) Follow the road to the left for 100 m. Then turn left, following the Red Diamond signpost towards Blauen.

(4) When you reach the viewing tower, walk past the relay tower, the car park and the Blauen hotel. Then continue to follow the Red Diamond to the east of the hotel. Ignore the path on the right which leads back up towards the hotel. At the next fork, first turn right then left whilst following the Red Diamond to the Nikolauswald signpost.

(5) Take the unmarked path on the left and follow the Neuer Blauenweg. Pass the first junction. At the next Y-junction, take the right-hand branch, then join the Hexenplatzweg and turn left. At the next Fork in the road, turn right. Ignore the path on the right and the three paths on the left. You will come to another Fork in the road.

(6) Continue along the path marked with a Yellow Diamond on the left, which will take you to the car park (S/E).
