Historical sites and vineyard around Badenweiler

Start: Free car park Southern side of Badenweiler village (Parkplatz süd).

(S/E) From the Electric car charging area located at the top North-East of the car park, walk past the information board "Veranstaltungen" and bench on your right-hand side. Cross the small road to enter the woodland. As you enter, you quickly reach a T-junction where you turn left (away from the yellow hiking sign). As you walk down this single track, you have the road on your left-hand side.

Reach a street that you cross and turn left. Carefully walk along it to reach the road junction. Carefully cross to turn right and walk on safe pavement along "Blauenstraße" street. As you walk downhill, you will start to follow a park on your left-hand side. Find the park entrance with the sign "Schlosspark" where you turn left downhill to enter it.

(1) Walk downhill past a playground on your right-hand side. Keep walking downhill, ignoring paths on the left and right until you reach the bottom of the park with the underground car park entrance on your left and a beautiful mansion (old building) on your right. Walk past the car park entrance, keeping right to walk past the historical building on your right-hand side. This building is the "Grossherzogliches Palais und Schlosspark". After enjoying, walk to the road.

Cross the pedestrian crossing to reach Badenweiler central square. Cross it straight ahead past the sculpture (which is a fountain). Keep walking to reach the visitor centre located ahead of you. (A) Walk past it towards the Castle ruins.

(2) At the junction, keep straight, ignoring the way going up toward "Belvedere/Burg". Keep walking straight until you reach a nice viewpoint and benches. (B) (On the way, you'll meet a path going downhill on your left, which goes to a little aromatic plant garden if you wish to take a detour). When you finish enjoying the place, carry on the way, walking with the castle ruins on your right-hand side.

(3) Reach a Y-junction, you can either walk right and right up again to go visit the castle ruins and come back or keep left downhill. As you walk downhill keep left at the curve, ignoring the path straight ahead. Then, at the next T-junction, turn right downhill to reach a historical kiosk with a nice view and benches.

(4) Turn right (East) to walk past the kiosk on your right-hand side. Get to a path junction where you carry on slightly up along the paved path, ignoring the path on the right. The paved path curves right to reach a 3-way junction.

(5) Turn left downhill away from the castle ruins. Keep walking downhill as you walk past "Hotel Schlossberg" on your left. The path will soon curve to the right.

(6) Walk downhill to reach a 3-way junction where you turn left downhill again. Keep walking downhill along this paved path to reach a road where you turn left along it. Walk past the "Hotel Schlossberg" entrance sign. From here, you are walking downhill along a quiet road for a little while. Please keep aware of any cars. At the bottom, pass the house on your right, turn right along the road, then left almost straight away. Keep walking along this quiet road as it becomes a street. Walk between houses to reach a T-junction (Hohlenweg) where you turn left. If you are going the right way, you cross a bridge over a river to reach the main road.

Carefully cross the road (using the pedestrian crossing) and turn left on the pavement. Reach "Rebweg" street, where the hiking signpost is located and turn right along it uphill. Keep walking up between houses to enter the vineyard. As you walk uphill enjoy the view of Badenweiler Castle on your left. When you reach the bench, keep walking straight up past it among the vineyard.

(7) A little further, ignore the path going uphill on your right, keep straight toward the little shelter. Walk past it, take the path going uphill on your right.

(8) After 1.5 km or so, just past another vineyard hut and a further wooden table, reach a paved small road where you turn right uphill (South-East). Walk up past the "Weingut Schneider-Krafft" hut on your right. At the top of the hill, when you see the wooden shelter on your left, always keep straight towards the electrical pylon. At the junction with the benches, keep straight up past the tower on your left to enter the woodland.

(9) Reach a path junction with "Hohleweg" signpost on the left. Keep straight, then be careful as the path goes up, take the footpath downhill, right where the hiking signpost is. Follow the sign "Badenweiler" downhill. At the bottom of the hill, reach a path junction back to the vineyard. Turn right downhill to join the path you came from on the way up. At the bench, turn left, downhill, to retrace your steps back to the main road. Turn left. Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing to walk back up "Unterer Kirchweg" right.

Walk across the bridge over the river again, but this time ignore the street on the right where you came from on the way in, and walk straight up. Be careful, just past the "Bethesda" car park on your left, find a footpath left entering the "Park der Sinne".

(10) Turn left here (East) to enter the park. Keep straight as you come to a paved path. As you walk up, the white building on your left is a school. Ignore the path going to it and keep walking up to the sensory park.

(11) At the T-junction, you can choose to enjoy whichever features in this park! Have fun. If you don't want to, walk uphill (right) toward the huge double swing. Keep walking left past the swings toward the toilets. Reach the street where the information boards about the park and toilets are located. Turn right uphill toward Badenweiler city centre.

(12) As you reach the top of the hill, there is a hotel on your right. Take the small footpath up to the right, with the handrail. Three steps at the end lead you to the "Katharina Park Hotel and Spa" entrance. Cross the road here and go slightly left to find a park entrance on the right, "Kurpark". Turn right toward "Cassiopeia Therme", entering the park. At the Y-junction with the fountain, keep left up. As you walk, you have a pond on the right-hand side.

At the end of this pond, reach a junction with the modern thermal building and incredible Sequoia trees. Keep straight ahead to handrail it on your left-hand side. Keep walking straight in between the Roman ruins and the actual modern "Cassiopeia" thermal baths. Walk past the "Römische Badruine" on your right to carry straight ahead.

At the next 3-way junction, just past the ruin entrance, turn left uphill to walk past a tiny donkey statue. Keep walking uphill until you reach either the visitor centre entrance or the main square with the fountain you walked past on the way in. From here, just walk back to the car park using the same way as you came.(S/E)

(A) Here you can get coffee and cake at the "Café JK Duo" and local information. There are also toilets available.

(B) This is an ideal spot for enjoying the sunset. From here, you have a view of the vineyard and France with the Vosges mountains. On your right, you can spot an electrical tower where you are heading next. Behind you is the statue of "Friedrich Grossherzog von Baden". You can also access the castle ruins if you want to get another perspective and enjoy this historical site.

Relax: The modern "Cassiopeia" thermal baths are an ideal place to have a rest after a day of walking!

Kids: The "Park der Sinne" is ideal for having fun! Not just for kids ...
