Description of the walk

Start: Neuenfelshalle in Britzingen, Am Schulweg, 79379 Müllheim. There is a gravel car park here.

(S/E) From the car park at Neuenfelshalle, turn left into Zehntweg, past the town hall and St. John's Church. We reach Markgräflerstraße and follow it to the left. At the next opportunity, we leave it to the left and follow Hirzenweg.

(1) Then we take the second right and follow the Sonnholeweg along the vineyards. We continue uphill on the tarmac path into the forest. The Ehebach stream is on our right.
The tarmac path turns into a wide forest path.

(2) We reach a former quarry, which consists mainly of limestone. Cavities can be recognised in some places. An information sign provides information about the karstification in the Hauptrogenstein.
We follow the path further uphill and soon cross the Ehebach stream.

(3) We then reach Schwärzestraße and follow it to the left. Shortly afterwards, there is a car park and a rest area on the right-hand side. From here we have a great view of Badenweiler and the town's castle. We turn left and follow the Tannwaldweg, continuing uphill.

(4) We cross the Ehebach stream again and follow the path further uphill to the next fork, where we keep right and follow the forest path. At the next fork, we keep right and follow the "Eichenbergweg" sign. Our path then leads us to the right towards the Neuenfels castle ruins.

(5) We soon leave the Tannwaldweg and turn left onto the Theodor-Braus-Weg. At the Theodor-Braus-Weg signpost, we turn right towards the Neuenfels ruins.

(6) We reach this shortly afterwards. From here, we enjoy a great view over the Markgräflerland region, with a beautiful view of Badenweiler Castle and the Blauen. On a clear day, we can see the mountains of the Swiss Jura and the suburbs of Freiburg.

There is a table and benches here, which are ideal for a short break.

We return to the signpost at Theodor-Braus-Weg and turn right. Now we follow the path for about 2.5 kilometres and reach the signpost at Nußbaumplatz.

(7) Keep left here and follow the path downhill.

(8) We go straight on over the crossroads with the Silbereichenweg and soon reach another crossroads. Here we turn left and follow the narrow path further downhill.

(9) We reach the crossroads at Muggardter Höhe, keep left and then turn right past the wooden holiday home. From here we have another beautiful view and can see the village of Laufen below us.

(10) We pass Rebhüsle Muggardt and can enjoy another great view here shortly afterwards. We continue along the path to Muggardt.

(11) We turn right and pass the Protestant church. We wander through the small village and then walk through vineyards again and reach the edge of the L125.

(12) Here we keep left and follow a path until we reach the Heilweg, which we follow to the right and then immediately turn left again. Then we turn right and are back at our car park at the Neuenfelshalle (S/E).

A pleasant short hike, mostly through forest. Beautiful view of the Alsace plain from the castle ruins. Lots of ladybirds on the site during our hike. Enjoyable walk through the vineyards on the way down. The village is pretty, with a grocery shop that has a café area (cakes, tarts, etc.) with a terrace (run by village volunteers).
