Lanne Soubiran – Aire-sur-l'Adour

The fortieth stage of the Way of St James. On this stage, which ends in Aire-sur-l'Adour, you leave the department of Gers and enter the Landes. You also leave behind the muddy and slippery paths to arrive, once past the town of Aire-sur-l'Adour, on the lakeside walk at Lac de Brousseau.

Description of the walk

(S) From the church square, join the D152, turn right and continue until you reach a pretty half-timbered house.

(1) Turn left onto Chemin de Pitet and continue to the junction just past the entrance to Lahontan Farm.

(2) Continue south-west along the woodland path through the maize fields to enter the Lande du Bois.

(3) Turn right onto a path which, after crossing the Ruisseau de la Daubade, leads you into the Bois de la Rigade, where you climb until you emerge from the woods and follow the edge.

(4) At the end of this wooded section, turn left and continue uphill to the Chemin de la Rigade.

(5) Turn left, then right just before the top of the hill to cross the Saint-Mont vineyard along the Chemin de Lapujolle and then the Route de l'Entente. Continue on until you reach the large telecommunications pylon.

(6) Turn left onto Route de Pélauquet and follow the GR®65, which continues its rural route, sometimes passing alongside vineyards, sometimes through maize fields, to the hamlet of Castin.

(7) Turn left towards La Grange à Dubarry: a sign informs walkers about the welcome centre at Lelin Lapujolle. Continue to the fork on a small road that crosses the cereal fields.

(8) Keep to the right to continue south on a path that runs alongside farmland and vineyards, leading you down to the hamlet of Micoulas.

(9) First turn left then right, ignoring the sign for Grange à Dubarry, and continue downhill to the junction at the hamlet of Brana.

(10) Turn right and stay on the small road for 700 m to reach the entrance to the village of Lelin-Lapujolle, opposite the cemetery.

(11) Head right, pass the church and the town hall, and turn right at the Stop sign to continue on the D169. Continue through the village to the last house before a right-hand bend.

(12) Take the hairpin bend to the left, continue to the two isolated houses and stay on the left-hand side of the bend to continue and rejoin the D169.

(13) Head right and, at the fork by the Peyroutas stream, stay on the left-hand track to continue along the Route de Catchebot, through the fields, until you reach a Stop sign in front of a tourist railway line.

(14) Continue to the right on a dirt track running parallel to the railway line.

(15) Keep heading north-west. Follow the railway line along a path that is grassy at first, then turns into a tarmac track: you may come across rest stops, set up by local residents, where you can quench your thirst and top up your supplies via a donation box. Pass the lodge at Ponsin and continue to the level crossing guard’s house at level crossing no. 56.

(16) Turn left, cross the railway line and then the hamlet of Manciet to reach Costefort. Continue to the ‘Give Way’ sign, then carefully cross the D935 and carry on opposite along the small tarmac road. Pass the pumping station and continue to a solitary tree.

(17) Turn right, cross the Ruisseau du Turré and head north-west to follow, for about two kilometres, a grassy path winding through the maize fields, leading to the Ruisseau du Jarras at the junction with the Chemin de Canavera in Barcelonne-du-Gers.

(18) Continue to the right along the Ruisseau du Jarras to arrive at the magnificent wash house in Barcelonne-du-Gers.

(19) Turn left onto Boulevard du Midi. Pass the emergency services centre. At the Bar-restaurant du Moulin, keep going in the same direction and head down the small Rue de l'Abattoir. Pass under the porch of a half-timbered house and continue to the junction with Rue de Casamont, where an old prison is located.

(20) Continue to the right to reach Place de la Garlande. Turn left onto the D512 (against the flow of traffic). Continue until you reach Route d’Aire-sur-Adour in the town of Aire-sur-l’Adour.

(21) Turn left towards the Lacrouts housing estate, then head right onto Chemin des Moncaux, which continues as Rue des Saligats, running alongside the fields on your left. Continue to the end of Rue des Saligats and turn right to join Avenue du Quatre Septembre.

(22) Turn left: refreshments available here at Carrefour Market. Continue to the Les Platanes hotel-restaurant.

(23) Turn left, then right onto Impasse Frédéric Levrier and continue to Rue du Treize Juin. Cross the bridge over the Adour and continue to the crossroads.

(24) Take Rue Carnot, slightly to the right opposite (CIC Bank) towards the Town Hall. Walk to the end of the street to arrive in front of a Petit Casino shop.

(25) Turn right onto Rue Henri Labeyrie, cross the Canal du Moulin and continue along Avenue des Pyrénées. Walk past the statue of a pilgrim, then, keeping to the left-hand pavement, continue to No. 11.

(26) At the crossroads, turn left towards Sainte-Quitterie Church (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) via Rue Félix Despagnet, which continues from Rue du Mas to the École du Mas.

(27) At the stop sign, turn left onto the D834 (Avenue des Pyrénées) and continue to the roundabout.

(28) Turn right towards Geaune via Avenue Nelson Mandela. Continue until you reach the red building.

(29) Turn left onto Rue Georges Fraisse and continue to the stop sign.

(30) Continue left towards the south-west along Rue du Jardinet (one-way street). Carry on until the junction with Rue du Brousseau.

(31) Turn right, then continue along the dead-end road into a wooded area before reaching Lac du Broussau. Follow the lake’s right-hand bank until you reach the D456 at the far end.

(32) Continue straight ahead to the bridge that passes under the A65 motorway.

(33) About fifty metres before the bridge, leave theGR®65and turn right onto a wide path blocked by a barrier. Then follow a path through the woodland to reach the lakeside. Continue until you reach a picnic area and set up camp for the night (E).

Worth a visit

(18) Barcelonne-du-Gers: the wash house is one of the largest in the Gers department; it is used every year for the patron saint’s festivities during the traditional trout fishing competition reserved for the village children. The timber used for the roof structure comes from the old market hall.

Between points (25) and (26), the Church of Sainte-Quitterie in Aire-sur-l'Adour: a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

(E) Lac du Broussau: a 37-hectare artificial lake, situated in a wooded setting which makes it an area rich in biodiversity and a favourite stopover for migratory birds.
