Lac Vert and Lac de Chésery

This hike covers a moderate distance and elevation gain, making it a great opportunity to introduce young children or occasional walkers to the mountains. In a beautiful setting, you will reach two charming mountain lakes. There are several shorter or longer variations.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Col de Bassachaux, accessible by car from Châtel (car park at the pass).

From Col de Bassachaux (S/E) to Col de Chésery (4), follow theGR®5, which is rarely marked in red and white. From Col de Chésery (4) to the refuge of the same name (5), there are a few red-white-red markings. More useful are the directional signs at major intersections.

(S/E) From Col de Bassachaux, head south-east on an alpine track towards Lac Vert. Climb gently and note the view of Lac de Montriond on the right. At the first fork (La Lambe), continue gently uphill on the right-hand track. At the second fork, below a chalet, also turn right.

(1) Cross a ski slope (snow cannons), descend slightly and pass under a chairlift line.

(2) At the Chaux Fleurie crossroads, cross a mountain bike trail and continue south-east towards the Col de Chésery and Lac Vert. Follow a mixed footpath and mountain bike trail and ignore a parallel path on the right. The path becomes stony and, still heading south-east, climbs up the side of the rocky foothills of Pointe de Chésery.

(3) At a fork (rock block with markers), take the path on the right (the one on the left is a mountain bike trail). After a short climb, ignore a mountain bike trail coming from the left and go around a small wetland on the right. Stay on the main trail, ignoring vague tracks on either side. Note the Dents Blanches massif in the background on the right and climb gently up to the Col de Chésery.

(4) Then take the path on the right towards the Refuge de Chésery and follow the winding, fairly flat path to reach the refuge, which is easily recognisable by a Swiss flag erected on a nearby hillock.

(5) Immediately on the right is Lac Vert (you can walk around it, not marked on the map).

(6) Return to the refuge.

(5) Leave the refuge on your left and follow the wide path north towards Lac de Chésery.

(7) At an intersection (viewpoint over the lake), turn right towards Sassex/Morgins. Descend the path through the pastures and reach Lac de Chésery.

(8) Climb back up the same path to the intersection.

(7) Then turn right towards Avoriaz/Montriond. At a fork, take the left and leave the alpine chalets on your right. Climb gently up to the Col de Chésery.

(4) Begin the descent towards Bassachaux by taking the path on the left (the one you took on the way up; on the right is the mountain bike trail).

(3) Back at the fork with the rock, take the path on the right (the parallel path on the left descends lower and then climbs again). At a triple fork (altitude 1860), take the middle path (signposted "Tour VTT"; ignore a vague path on the left and a path climbing towards Crête des Rochassons on the right).

(2) At the Chaux Fleurie crossroads, cross the mountain bike trail and head slightly uphill towards a chalet. Leave the chalet on your right and follow the alpine trail to the Col de Bassachaux (S/E).

Practical information

Hiking boots are required or, failing that, good sports shoes. In summer, bring appropriate sun protection.

No water sources identified along the route. Lac Vert and Lac de Chésery are ideal places to stop for a break or a picnic. Bar-restaurant at Col de Bassachaux (S/E). Cold drinks and snacks available at Refuge de Chésery (5).

A detailed map is required (at least the one accompanying this description).
N.B. At a scale of 1:25,000, it is impossible to obtain the entire route of this Franco-Swiss hike on the IGN map or the Swiss map. I opted for a 1:50,000 Swiss map because it is more accurate than an OSM map and because, at this scale, the IGN map does not show the two lakes that are the destinations of this hike. On the screen (under the "Large Map" tab), select the appropriate map to see details at a scale of 1:25,000.

Important notes:
- Due to its easy access and proximity to the refuge, Lac Vert is a popular spot. Don't hesitate to set off early in the morning. Those seeking peace and quiet will prefer Lac de Chésery as a place to stop.
- The area is shared with downhill mountain bikers: take care when crossing mountain bike trails.

Variations and additional information:
- Lac Vert alone - On your return to the refuge (5) from the lake (6), follow the route to the intersection (7): it would be a shame to miss the view of Lac de Chésery. Then turn left towards Montriond/Avoriaz, go directly to the Col de Chésery (4) and follow the descent route to the Col de Bassachaux (S/E). Expect a drop of around 100m.
- Lac de Chésery alone - At Col de Chésery (4), take the unmarked path on the left. Leave the alpine chalets on your left and continue to the intersection (7). Then descend to the left towards Sassex/Morgins and reach Lac de Chésery (8). From there, follow the route.
- Ascent to Col des Portes de l'Hiver - For a superb view of the Dents du Midi and Dents Blanches, from Lac Vert (6), take the wide path that goes around the lake on the left and climbs steadily to the pass, changing direction from east to south. Descend to the lake via the same path. Allow for an additional 100m of elevation gain.

In the nearby area

- Beautiful alpine landscapes.
- View of Lac de Montriond between (S/E) and (1).
- View of the Dents Blanches massif before arriving at the Col de Chésery. However, only the tips of one or two of the eastern peaks of the Dents du Midi are visible.
- Lac Vert and Lac de Chésery are located in beautiful settings, dominated respectively by Pointe des Mossettes (to the south) and Pointe de Chésery (to the west).

Great hike! Honestly, the scenery is magnificent! There are incredible views throughout the entire hike, with several mountain ranges. The trail is easy and straightforward, with only one route, so you can't get lost.

A magnificent round trip from the Bassachaux Pass. An easy hike, mainly on flat paths, which we did with three children without any problems. The landscapes are splendid and there is plenty of wildlife (griffon vultures and bearded vultures were spotted). We went as far as the green lake where the Chésery refuge sells drinks and didn't go on to Lake Chésery. We'll do this hike again next year!

Departure from the car park at 7am, in the cool of the morning, very few people around. Very easy, rich and varied flora, beautiful landscapes
From 9:30 a.m., the crowds arrive and the car park is full

Do the reverse route via the Tête des Lindarets to descend to the Col des Chésery, then go first to the Lac des Chésery before climbing back up to the much prettier Lac Vert

A lovely, easy hike to the green lake.
We went to Lake Chezery, but it was a bit low on water.
We were lucky enough to see a chamois and hear marmots.

A very beautiful hike. Even the day after rain, it is still very passable.
At Point 2: "Carrefour de la Chaux Fleurie", I preferred to take the small path parallel to the mountain bike trail.
It's less dangerous than having mountain bikes coming at high speed in front of and behind you.
It is marked GR5 and takes you to the same place without any changes. And at Point 3, you are already in the right place 👍
In summer 2023, the complete tour of Lac Vert is prohibited due to work on the upper trails. But you can do half of it, which allows you to admire it from several angles. Lac de Chésery is also magnificent.

A very beautiful hike, with lots of flowers along the trail. Upon arriving at the refuge, there is a lovely view of the green lake surrounded by meadows. A beautiful setting for a picnic. We continued on to the Chésery Pass, with beautiful views of the snow-capped mountains. We walked around the lake, following the well-marked trail. We returned to the Bassachaux Pass on 11 June 2022. A long but not difficult walk.

A pleasant walk, without too many difficulties.
We weren't brave enough to go down to Lake Chésery, so we contented ourselves with admiring it from halfway up the slope.

A very pleasant walk with a chance encounter with some very friendly cows. We didn't complete the entire descent to Lake Chéséry as there was still quite a lot of snow. We had a very pleasant break at Lac Vert and enjoyed a beautiful view of Lake Montriond on the first part of the route

Nice hike. The landscape is a bit monotonous until you reach the Chésery Pass. We were lucky enough to see a chamois.
Alternative route possible for the return journey via another path (altitude 1,862 metres) towards the Rochasson chairlift, then take the "discovery trail" towards the Col de Bassachaux.
