Pointe and Chalets de Lens, starting from the Col de Bassachaux

This beautiful circular walk starting from the Col de Bassachaux will take you along a wide variety of paths, some of which are unmarked. These forgotten sections of the trail sometimes wind their way through the vegetation. From the Arête des Fours, you can admire the sweeping view down over the Lens mountain pasture and its chalets, with the Mont de Grange in the background.

Description of the walk

Starting point at the Col de Bassachaux, the end of the D228a road which begins at the foot of Châtel.

(S/E) At the signposts for the Col de Bassacheaux, follow an unmarked path north-west (do not turn left, west, towards the Alpage de Lens). This path winds its way through the vegetation to the Pointe de Lens.

(1) Turn left (west) and continue along the Arête des Fours to the Pointe des Lanches.

(2) Descend on the other side to reach the Col de l’Aup Couti (signposted).

(3) Follow the signs for l’Aup Couti and the Chalets de Lens on the right. Descend along a marked path and cross a mountain pasture before reaching a junction (signs for l’Aup Couti).

(4) Head towards the Chalets de Lens on the right (due east). After a slight climb, follow the path down to the Chalets de Lens.

(5) Take an alpine track to pass through the cluster of chalets and continue the descent, following the signs for the Alpage de Lens and Lenlevay.

(6) At the signposts for the Alpage de Lens, turn off onto the track on the right towards Lenlevay. Pass the chalets on your left and you’ll come to a wide left-hand bend in the track (wooden post).

(7) Leave the track and turn right onto an unmarked path that sometimes winds its way through the vegetation. The climb is quite steep until you reach the junction with a track (signposted for Les Grands Plans).

(8) Follow the signs for the Col de Bassachaux (red and white GR®5 markings). Parts of this path have been modified to protect the peat bogs. Follow this path southwards to climb up to the Col de Bassachaux road.

(9) Turn right and follow the road to its end, where you’ll find the car park (S/E).

This easy hike is ideal for a relaxing outing in the mountains. From the shaded path leading to Les Brochaux to the magnificent panoramic views from the Mossettes chairlift, the route alternates between cool forests and breathtaking views. As you descend towards Lac Vert, the majestic Dents du Midi mountains reveal themselves in all their splendour, inviting you to enjoy a sunny picnic by the water's edge. The rest of the walk is just as gentle, following a panoramic path facing the Roc d'Enfer, with the added bonus of peaceful cows dotting the alpine landscape. N.B. The distance and, above all, the elevation gain shown are overestimated as they include a chairlift ride. For walking, allow for around 8 km of horizontal distance, 100 m of elevation gain and 750 m of elevation loss.
