Lac de Plagnes via the Col de L'Aup Couti

This hike will take you to the heights with belvederes and sublime views. You will encounter nature in all its diversity, with mountain pastures and the possibility of seeing a flock of sheep and their shepherd. The first part from the start to the lake remains wild, but the ascent is busier and more "touristy".

Description of the walk

Starting point at the Col de Bassachaux car park. (accessible by road via "Pré la Joux - Châtel)

(S/E) Head west on a path below the car park towards Col de L'Aup Couti (signposted), which quickly enters the woods and runs along the hillside. When you reach a mountain pasture, continue to a signposted intersection.

(1) Then climb to the right and reach Col de l'Aup Couti. This is an opportunity to make a short detour to a nearby viewpoint.

(2) Continue east on the main trail for about 50 metres. Then turn left and descend on a steep trail towards the Refuge des Tinderets and Aup Couti. At a fork in the descent, take the left fork.

(3) At an intersection, turn left again and enter a wooded area, continuing downhill. Follow the signs for Lac de Plagnes via Refuge des Tinderets. You will reach the refuge, located in a pretty clearing.

(4) Continue on the same path and descend on your left towards Lac de Plagnes. At an intersection, turn right. Follow the path, which heads due north, and join an alpine track. Continue north on the track and complete the gentle descent to a place called Cubourré (large rocks deposited here at the end of the Ice Age).

(5) Then take a path on the left towards Lac des Plagnes (the track continues towards the car park). The path is steep in the undergrowth and passes close to a waterfall. Cross a small bridge below and continue along the path with beautiful views of the lake during the descent.

(6) At the crossroads, follow the path on the left that runs along the western shore of the lake. At the end, turn right, follow the northern shore and continue straight on towards the houses in Les Plagnes and the car park.

(7) Once you reach the road, you can take a short detour to see the Saint-Anne chapel on the left, slightly below. Return to the car park and cross it. Continue along an alpine track called "Chemin rural des Plagnes à Lens".

(8) Follow the main path that branches off to the left, continuing uphill. Stay on the mountain track, ignoring the paths branching off to the sides, and gradually climb up to the Chalets de Lens.

(9) At the fork, turn left and cross the charming hamlet located in the mountain pastures.

(10) At the intersection, continue straight ahead, east then south-east, towards Grands Plans Haut and Col de Bassachaux. The path becomes a little steeper and the elevation gain increases rapidly, requiring sustained effort. Reach a sort of pass with a signposted intersection.

(11) Turn right (south) towards Col de Bassachaux. Follow theGR®5trail, which is slightly sloped, then cross a few peat bogs. Return to the Col de Bassachaux road and follow it to the right until you reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

This hike can also be done starting from the Lac des Plagnes car park, which is accessible by car from the village of Abondance.
However, my description is based on starting from the Col de Bassachaux:
- a road accessible by car leads to the pass via the town of Châtel - towards Pré-Lajoux.
- This allows you to take a break for lunch halfway along the route at the tables and benches by the lake.
- As the section between the Col de L'Aup Couti and Lac de Plagnes is quite steep, we descend first, before climbing back up via the Chalet de Lens on an alpine track with a more gradual gradient.

Hiking boots are recommended as the steep descent to the point (6) requires a minimum of grip under the soles. Hiking poles are also highly recommended in this area and it is best to be an "experienced hiker" for the first part, especially if it has rained recently!

It is possible to walk around Lac des Plagnes on a good path (an extra 30 minutes).

Worth a visit

- Belvédère du Col de L'aup Couti
- The Refuge des Tinderets and its mountain setting
- A waterfall with a wooden bridge
- Lac de Plagnes
- The hamlet of Chalets de Lens

Departure from Lac des Plagnes in the opposite direction to the recommended route, ending with a fairly gentle descent...
Between points 10 and 11 (11 and 10 for us), the path is rarely used and the vegetation becomes a bit of a nuisance.
We set off at 8.30am today and found the climb up to Aulp Couti really beautiful!
Following the rain over the last few days, the path between point 11 and the arrival at the Col de Bassachaux is very muddy.
Overall, a very positive experience for this hike, thank you!

Please note that since the end of June 2024, the climb from Lac des Plagnes to Chalets de Lens has been prohibited, even for hikers. (Section between points 8 and 9). It will be necessary to check how long this prohibition will remain in place.
A useful reminder, which will surely be obvious to some but may have been overlooked by us, is that the refuge does not accept credit cards.

This comment by Christophe13930 is exactly what I wanted to say.
I would just add that when doing this route starting from Lac des Plagnes and taking the Arête des Fours variant, you need to be careful at the start of the short descent from Pointe des Lanches.
A very beautiful hike. We did it starting from Lac des Plagnes and turning in the opposite direction.
There was only one small variation in the route: between the Col de Bassachaux and the Col de l'Aup Couti, we went via the Arête des Fours. The path is well marked, unmarked, and offers beautiful views on both sides.

A very beautiful hike. We started from Lac des Plagnes and walked in the opposite direction.
We made one small change to the route, between the Bassachaux Pass and the Aup Couti Pass, taking the Arête des Fours route instead. The path is well marked, although not signposted, and offers beautiful views on both sides.

Hike completed in 4.5 hours, not including lunch break.
The route is very pleasant, especially the first part from the start to the lake. The second part is less enjoyable as it follows a path where you encounter a few vehicles.
The welcome at the Tinderets refuge is very friendly. The cheeses and blueberry tart are excellent.
We had a wonderful day.
Thank you, Jolissap, for this discovery.

Thank you for your comment. I walk in "contemplative" mode, but I think you walked at a steady pace!
Today, I did "Les Mattes par les Boudimes" again, which I had already shared on Visorando. It's also worth doing, but starting from Châtel...

The hike was estimated to take 5 hours and 5 minutes, but we completed it in 3 hours and 50 minutes, even though we are not particularly athletic but are regular hikers.
We preferred to set off from the Lac des Plagnes car park so we could make the climb in the cool of the morning when we were feeling fit ;-)
The route is very pleasant with magnificent views of the valleys and peaks.
We stopped at the Tinderets refuge for a bite to eat. The welcome is great and if you want to try the delicious blueberry tart, it's best to reserve it in advance as it's very popular ;-)

Thank you, Jolissap, for this beautiful hike.
