Description of the walk

The starting point is at the Barrage du Crescent car park, to the west of the dam.

(S) Head north, with the lake on your right, and follow the GRP® Tour du Morvan (red and white markings). Cross the Barrage du Crescent and climb briefly to a crossroads.

(1) Follow the road to the right and uphill. Reach the hamlet of Chézelles and ignore the paths on the left.

(2) At the crossroads, turn right. The road quickly gives way to a path. The path then joins the road, which you should follow to the right until you reach Montigny.

(3) Turn left onto Route du Château (D192) while following the red and yellow markings. At the junction that quickly appears, turn right.

(4) At the three-way junction, follow the middle road straight ahead (leave the GRP® Tour du Morvan). At an intersection (elevation 401), continue straight ahead.

(5) At the next junction, continue straight ahead on the GRP® Tour de l'Avallonnais (red and yellow signs). Then cross the D36 with caution and continue on the road opposite for about 100 metres.

(6) Then take a path on the left onto the GRP® Tour de l'Avallonnais (red and yellow markings). Walk along the edge of a wood, ignore a path on the right and continue between the meadows.

(7) Follow the GRP® Tour de l'Avallonnais, turning right at the crossroads and left at the next fork to continue along the path that crosses the fields and then the Bois de Boulamont.

(8) At the D75, turn right at the crossroads towards the village 300 m away.

(9) Pass a park with a small lake on your right and turn left at the fork to continue on the D75 until you reach a fork at the end of the village.

(10) Keep left, leaving the D75, and follow the road through the woods.

(11) Leave the road and take a forest track on the right (red and yellow signs) which leads to the D10.

(12) Follow it to the left for about 50 metres. When the road turns left, go straight ahead onto a path (red and yellow markings). Cross the Bois des Courtois, staying on the main marked path, heading north.

(13) At the crossroads, turn left with the GRP®. You will come out onto a small road and follow it for about 150 metres.

(14) Then take a path that branches off to the right. Cross a wood and you will arrive at the Château des Pannats.

(15) Ignore the road that branches off to the left and continue straight ahead on the path descending between two fields (still following the GRP®). You will come to a stone bridge over the river and join the D944 road directly below a power line.

(16) Follow it to the right along the Cousin to the Pont Claireau.

(17) At the end of the bridge, leave the D944 and turn right onto a road. When it turns right, continue straight ahead on a smaller road and follow a campsite.

(18) When the small road turns right, take the path that climbs up to the left. Join the D944 (Rue de Lormes) and follow it to the right for about 50 metres.

(19) At the crossroads, turn left onto Rue des 2 Cousins and follow the GRP®. You will arrive at the Cousin le Pont car park (E).

Your three-stage circuit, starting and ending in Avallon, is now complete. You can return to your car in the car park where you left it on the first day or take the train from Avallon station.

Notes

Route recorded in June 2023.

Bring food for the day. Shops are only available in Avallon (at the end of the hike).

For water, the route passes through numerous villages with cemeteries where there is a water source. It is also possible to ring residents' doorbells...

Worth a visit

A lovely walk, thank you to the author!
For my part, to avoid a bit of tarmac, I followed the educational trail along the edge of Crescent Lake, just opposite the car park after stage 1.
