The Crescent Dam and Chastellux Castle

Between Saint-Germain and Chastellux, a walk in the northern Morvan, through pastures, meadows, woods and hamlets. This is initially a rural route that joins the road after passing the dam. The path then becomes more wooded until it passes under the bridge of the main road. The final few kilometres follow a small road. As well as the Crescent reservoir, you can admire the beautiful Château de Chastellux. There is also a short passage under a small aqueduct, which is actually an underground river that required a small structure due to the terrain.

Description of the walk

Parking is available alongside the church of Saint-Germain-des-Champs.

(S/E) Turn your back on the church and head towards the town hall.

(1) Turn left after passing the war memorial. Follow the path down to a junction at the edge of a wooded area.

(2) Once you have passed the bend to the right, turn left to continue along the path. Pass the isolated house.

(3) Turn right to follow the stream.

(4) Just before the mill, cross the stream via a small stone bridge, then take the path leading uphill to the left towards Lingoult.

(5) In the centre of the hamlet, continue to the right along the road.

(6) Just before the Crescent dam, turn right and follow the road. Continue across the dam to reach a car park.

(7) Follow the road uphill, keeping the D444 on your left.

(8) After the first houses of Huis Raquin and before the junction with the main road, turn right. Continue along the path through the woods, which approaches the Cure, then runs alongside it, veering to the left. Pass under the bridge of the main road and join a road below the castle.

(9) Turn right onto the small bridge, negotiate the left-hand bend, then turn right to join the road (D944).

(10) Cross it with great care (bend) and take the path opposite which climbs up and joins a tarmac road (D75).

(11) Turn right to follow it.

(12) Pass close to a pond on your left and continue towards Saint-Germain-des-Champs. Join the D36 just after the cemetery, and turn right.

(1) Continue straight on to return directly to the starting point near the church (S/E).

The magnificent castle at Chastellux-sur-Cure is only open to visitors in summer and on some weekends in May.

(6) At the Crescent reservoir, admire the power of the water as it flows out through the turbines.

A lovely walk in the spring sunshine.
I’d like to point out a minor difficulty, or confirm it: around point 8, when you’re coming up from the lake and take the little path on the right into the hamlet, you come up against an insurmountable obstacle: very tall brambles, with no way to get past them (unless you crawl under some barbed wire, hmm...and follow the field along the wire: I wouldn’t recommend it).
It would be better to take the road that curves to the right just before the hamlet, and which joins the wide dirt track that you’re supposed to take according to the route description.
The walk ends with a fairly long straight stretch of road, but it’s surrounded by greenery.

A lovely walk in the spring sunshine. Easy to follow.
Just one downside at the end of the route along the Cure: lots of trees cut down along the path. Not very convenient.
We didn't meet anyone, very peaceful.

A very beautiful hike with a pleasant section through the forest along the river.
Please note: before point 8, the sign and GPS track indicate a dead end. Take the path before the first house to get back on the right track.

A very pleasant walk with beautiful scenery. Best done in dry weather, as the forest section can become muddy or even impassable.

Please note that the passage after the dam runs along the riverbed, and at the end of the route, we saw signs indicating that hiking is not permitted because the dam may release water at any time and the area is dangerous. You must find another way back

As of 6 July, the dam has reopened; there are no problems getting through by car or on foot.

Enjoy the short walk.
I preferred to do another circular route after the bridge over the river, turning left and following it along. The path is lovely along the water.
Thanks for this walk!

A fairly interesting walk.
The Crescent Dam is under construction, so the path is theoretically closed, even to walkers.
Part of the path near the river is very muddy; part of the path is closed, so you have to go back along the road to rejoin the path (thanks to the GPS watch).
Arrived at Chastellux but not at the castle, then headed back up towards Saint Germain des Champs via the road, but there was very little traffic.
