Lac Achard, Col de la Botte and Croix de Chamrousse

This route allows you to stay away from the resort facilities whilst enjoying the scenery and sweeping views. Alternating between forest trails and crossings through mountain pastures, it is varied enough to satisfy most people.

Description of the walk

From Grenoble, head to Uriage-les-Bains to take the road up to Chamrousse via Prémol. Start from the car park on the Route de Bachat Bouloud opposite the Skiset shop.

(S/E) Cross the road and head to the left of the Skiset shop to join the tarmac path, continuing straight on for about fifty metres until it turns into a track.

(1) Ignore the path on the right that goes behind the buildings and continue straight on the one opposite, which descends slightly.

(2) At the clearing, continue left onto the track which enters the forest, sometimes cutting across or running parallel to the cross-country ski trails (which you must take care not to disturb), then climbs a few steep sections, generally following the summer path to the open plateau where Lac Achard is situated.

(3) Take the path on the right up towards the gap in the Col de l'Infernet, which you can see ahead.

(4) Continue traversing the slope to reach the bottom of the valley below the Col de la Botte. Ascend this valley either along the valley floor with a few ascents and descents, or by traversing the right bank, then climb the final slope via switchbacks to reach the Col des Trois Fontaines, where the downhill ski runs leading to the Lacs Robert pass through.

(5) Turn left to climb along the track up the ridge leading to the summit plateau of the Croix de Chamrousse. The triangulation point is bristling with antennas and situated amidst the ski lifts: we recommend the south-eastern summit instead, a little away from the slopes, which is equipped with orientation tables.

(6) Descend to the Col des Trois Fontaines.

(5) Cross to the right, on level ground, to reach the Col de la Botte, which opens out towards the Col des Lessines.

(7) Return to the valley you took on the ascent and descend it to the Col de l'Infernet.

(4) Head to Lac Achard.

(3) There, follow the snowshoe trail no. 4, which heads west towards Roche-Béranger. The route involves a few short climbs and avoids the direct summer descent towards Arselle to protect the black grouse’s resting areas. Without losing any altitude, it joins the marked ski touring route ascending to the Croix de Chamrousse from Arselle.

(8) Turn left to begin the descent, continuing to follow the markings. It runs alongside a few ski runs and then follows a closed track reserved for snowmobiles, which leads to the edge of the Roche-Béranger road.

(9) Turn left to stay parallel to the road and reach the start car park (S/E).

Notes

The circular route between Arselle and Lac Achard is fully signposted by snowshoe route no. 4, “Lac Achard via Arselle”. The summer markings (yellow) are barely visible.

There are no technical difficulties or hazards on this route. The proximity of the ski runs at the summit and at the end of the descent should be taken into account if you are seeking the usual tranquillity of snowshoe walks.

Set off fairly early in the morning if you’re looking for some peace and quiet, as during the day, Lac Achard is a very popular destination (for walkers with crampons, snowshoes and touring skis).

Lac Achard is set in magnificent surroundings.

There are sweeping views from various points along the route, and of course from the summit: Belledonne, Meije, Écrins, the Taillefer Massif, Obiou and Matheysine, Vercors, Chartreuse.

Snowshoe hike on 1 March in glorious sunshine. A lovely, well-marked route with beautiful scenery. A few icy patches at the start of the trail; not many people out that day, though we did meet a few skiers.
I highly recommend it!

What a joy it was to get back on my skis. The weather was lovely, the snow was good, but of course we weren’t the only ones there...
I was glad I’d brought my rock skis, as there’s no base layer and the rocks are never far away. Have a great ski tour

A lovely, well-marked route; splendid, magnificent and unobstructed views.
Lots and lots and lots of people today, and lots and lots and lots of biting, icy wind as soon as you reach the pass.
Thanks for this post!
