Le Habert and Croix des Ramées from the Lans-en-Vercors snow stadium

This snowshoe hike takes you along a well-marked trail from the snow stadium in Lans-en-Vercors to the foot of the Grande Roche Saint-Michel (without reaching it).
You will stop in front of the Habert des Ramées, then continue your exploration of the plateau beneath the Grande Roche to reach the viewpoint over the Lans valley from the Croix des Ramées.
The descent to the snow stadium offers different landscapes, even though it is the same path.

Description of the walk

Climb from Lans-en-Vercors towards the snow stadium. The car parks reserved for hikers are on your left when you arrive at the snow stadium.
It is also possible to go up by bus.

(S/E) Once equipped, head north on foot. At the end of the two car parks, a footpath leads to the "Les Virets" ski lift to the north.
Continue north, keeping to the left side of the slope, and pass the two ski lift stations, "Les Virets" and "La Combe des Virets".
The signposts for the snowshoe route begin after this point: they are purple in colour, with a white snowshoe above the number "1", which is the route number for the entire hike.
Sometimes the words "Chemin des Ramées" are added in white on a red background. You will reach a fork in the path.

(1) Take the left-hand path reserved for pedestrians going up and down. The right-hand path is prohibited; it is a downhill trail on a forest path used by cross-country skiers and sometimes by very fast downhill skiers.
After four sharp bends uphill, the path skirts the ski run and then heads north to take you to Pas de la Tinette.

(2) Follow the path on the right towards "Les Ramées". You will soon come to another crossroads. Turn right and follow the snowshoe path.
Be careful here: do not take the wrong path facing you and heading north, as it is very difficult to navigate with snowshoes.
The snowshoe trail eventually climbs steeply and leads to the ski touring trail. You will arrive at a place called "Sous les Virets".

(3) Turn left and head north towards "Sente Ramées". Stay on one side of the climb so as not to disturb the trail. You will arrive at the "Sente des Ramées" crossroads.

(4) Turn right between the shrubs and pine trees towards the east, "Habert des Ramées". The slope is difficult at first, but the view of the peaks on the right will put a smile on your face.
Continue straight ahead, ignoring the two paths on your left, which are more difficult with snowshoes, until you cross the main trail, which runs south-north.
Please note that for safety reasons, there is no descent to the right, as the passage is located above a rocky outcrop marked by danger signs.
Turn left towards the north and follow the track for 100 metres to reach Habert des Ramées, which is well sheltered from the wind.

(5) Set off again using the track that passes above, heading generally north-west.
The trail is not very wide. There are no signposts, but the tracks are obvious.
However, avoid the famous track a little way from Habert, heading north and leading to Moucherotte,GR®91. Come out onto the ski touring track at a place called "Merdaret".

(6) Descend to the left on the south-west facing track until you reach a wide left-hand bend. You will reach a large hairpin bend.

(7) Look carefully at the tracks on your right outside the wide bend and take a west-facing corridor of tracks passing under the fir trees. Reach the Croix des Ramées viewpoint.

(8) Enjoy the renowned panoramic view of the valley, the Vercors peaks and the Chartreuse mountains.
Return to the bend.

(7) Take the ski touring trail on the right, heading south-east, passing the crossroads you passed on the way up.

(4) Follow the same route back as on the way there, taking care at the various crossroads, to return to the snow stadium car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,391 m - Car park on the left of the uphill road.
  2. 1 : km 0.62 - alt. 1,395 m - Start of the separation between skiing/hiking and snowshoeing
  3. 2 : km 1.46 - alt. 1,456 m - Pas de la Tinette
  4. 3 : km 1.96 - alt. 1,533 m - Below Les Virets
  5. 4 : km 2.51 - alt. 1,575 m - Sente Ramées
  6. 5 : km 2.88 - alt. 1,621 m - Habert des Ramées
  7. 6 : km 3.66 - alt. 1,640 m - Merdaret
  8. 7 : km 4.1 - alt. 1,614 m - Access to the Croix des Ramées
  9. 8 : km 4.25 - alt. 1,605 m - Croix des Ramées
  10. S/E : km 7.4 - alt. 1,391 m - Car park on the left of the uphill road.

Notes

There is no water source. At Habert des Ramées, there is shelter available, but only for the first arrivals (8 to 10 places).
Reminder for everyone: the equipment left at Habert can save someone caught in bad weather, so do not take it, not even a piece of wood.
However, it would be appreciated if you could bring a self-opening tin, moisture-resistant safety matches, etc. to hang on the nails on the beams, out of reach of rodents.
Be sure to close the Habert door behind you, as snow could rush in and ruin the building.
Please note that the signposts indicate the time and distance: do not take into account the time marked on the signs, which is based on summer hikes.

(4) Important note: it is tempting here to head straight for the Croix des Ramées. This is possible, even if the signs first direct you to the Habert des Ramées. Overall, the route suggested for this hike is the least difficult.

(8) The Croix des Ramées is well worth the effort. It is not visible from the track; you have to follow a narrow trail heading west, which starts outside the big bend in the forest path/ski touring track. Look around a bit.
At this cross, do not approach the edge of the cliff, as the snow is unstable and would collapse under your light weight.
In general, stay on the sides of the ski trail when walking.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

The Lans en Vercors snow stadium is also:
- a family-friendly downhill ski resort with a great atmosphere and affordable lift passes,
- a cross-country ski trail starting at an altitude of 1,359 metres,
- and via Les Allières (starting point at "Les Barnets", altitude 1262) a gentle climb to equally interesting snowshoe trails.
Please note that pedestrians are not allowed on the cross-country ski trails from the snow stadium to Les Allières (on foot or snowshoes).
Alternative: For those who are dropped off at the snow stadium from Lans en Vercors, it is possible to descend on snowshoes to Lans via the Pas de la Tinette (2).
The pass takes you back to a place called "Les Jeux", then to a place called "Furon" and finally via the Impasse du Val Furon to the village of Lans en Vercors (purple route on the 1:25,000 IGN map).
Be careful on this descent, which must be well covered with snow to be enjoyable with snowshoes (steep slope at the Tinette pass and stones between Les Jeux and Furon).
This alternative route is part of the circular "Boucle sur le plateau des Allières" hike from (9) to (12). Edit it if you have this project.

A very popular route on Sundays. You can easily make a detour to climb up towards Moucherotte and enjoy a beautiful view of Grenoble and the Alps.

It was a beautiful route that I followed to Moucherotte (with a stunning view from the summit). Given the lack of snow, I left my snowshoes in the boot of the car. Be careful not to take the ski slope on the way up. It is possible to do so on the way down after the ski lifts have closed. There are also many possible variations on the plateau after the hut.

A short, easy hike to get your bearings. Do this hike with snowshoes on your feet, but even without them, it's no problem.

Route hike this Sunday in beautiful weather
The scenery is magnificent and the views are also fantastic
There were a lot of people there that day, but it wasn't too crowded.
There is a large car park at the start of the walk.
We got lost between 5 and 6 because the signage isn't great on the plateau But we cut across the path to reach the Merdaret
We'd love to do it again!

Beware of Patou!
A very beautiful and fairly easy hike.
But be careful at point 5! For no reason at all and despite all the precautions I took, I was attacked by a Patou.

Between points 5 and 6, we go around a herd of sheep with a fence.

I followed the path carefully and even moved away when I saw this impressive dog, but it wasn't enough! It continued to advance towards me, first walking, then trotting and finally running, despite the fact that I had moved away from the path!I had to run at full speed to reach point 5... The only thing that made him stop was my fall on a rock...

The result: a trip to A&E for safety's sake and my upper body completely scratched...

To enjoy this hike and avoid any mishaps, go to points 1, 2, 3, 4 and then straight to 7 without going through 6-5, which runs alongside a meadow...

No particular difficulties. The average time indicated of 3 hours is spot on: it took me 2 hours and 10 minutes to test it without stopping and 4 hours with a group of friends who were not very experienced and with a half-hour break for a snack.
A very good tool.
