From Granges Freydiere to the Cabane du Grand Colon

A lovely snowshoe walk in Belledonne with no major difficulties, a steady climb up to the hut through pretty forests.

Description of the walk

Start from the Granges Freydière car park.

(S/E) Head back towards the restaurant and follow the track to the right, ignoring the direction of the lake.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the track leading to the 4 Chemins car park.

(2) Take the track slightly to the right (southwards) which climbs steadily for about 2 km.

(3) Ignore a path branching off to the left (return route), continue to the Baraque des Carriers and go past it by about a hundred metres.

(4) Take the small path on the left which climbs quite steeply in hairpin bends and passes back over the hut. Join a wide track.

(5) Ignore the track and continue the climb along the path, which winds its way up in numerous hairpin bends.

(6) You’ll emerge onto a steep, open area; head down the slope towards the Cabane du Grand Colon just above. Please respect the black grouse quiet zone and keep your distance to protect them.

(7) Head back down the same switchbacks until you reach the wide track.

(5) Follow it to the right. This turns into a clear path that descends steeply.

(3) Return to the track taken on the way up and follow it back to Granges Freydière (S/E).

Notes

The road to the Freydière barns was very well cleared of snow despite heavy snowfall in the previous days; for safety’s sake, snow tyres are recommended, especially if the snowplough hasn’t been round yet.

This area also attracts quite a few ski tourers, with whom we share the mountains without any problems.
The Cabane du Grand Colon is open to hikers but was buried in snow today; a board under the roof must have fallen off and the wind blew snow inside.

Worth a visit

At Les Granges Freydière, hot drinks and other takeaways were available on the day we visited.

Snowshoe hike ending in powder snow at the edge of the forest. Didn't see anyone, only ski tracks. The Colon hut, which has a basic shelter (two benches/beds and a folding table), is very handy for sheltering from the wind during a picnic. Nice view of the Chartreuse. The summit of the Grand Colon is still far away, to be redone in summer or autumn...

A snowshoe hike – really lovely, with sections through the forest before reaching the hut with its stunning views. No difficulties.
Not many people around, but the weather was a bit mixed, so that might be why.

A popular route, particularly on the descent, with lots of ski tourers.
We realised this hike must have been longer than expected, as we covered 8km just to reach the first hut, where a sign indicated there were still 2.4km to go to reach our destination. Moreover, the information board at Freydière states ‘Grand Col’ is 6.2km, so with the return journey that makes 12.4km.Cebla misled us, which is why, time-wise, we couldn’t make it all the way. That said, it was a very lovely hike (done on snowshoes) ending at the frozen Lac Freydieres. 😉

This walk begins with a gentle climb along a wide forest track, then follows a slightly steeper, winding path through the forest, taking you above the tree line. From there, you’ll enjoy a stunning, unobstructed view of the Chartreuse range directly opposite, the Vercors as far as Mont Aiguille, and the Bauges massif. The route is popular with ski tourers, but there are no issues with sharing the trail. Given the number of cars in the Freydières car park (don’t arrive too late), it’s likely that most hikers are heading towards Lac Crozet rather than the Grand Colomb hut.
