La Vie des Terres and La Planche d'Enfer starting from Sillans

A very easy short walk. The only difficulty is a short hill.
In the first part, you will enjoy beautiful views of the Chartreuse mountains. In the middle, you will cross the pretty village of Izeaux, then return along a pleasant wooded path, skirting a beautiful private lake.

Description of the walk

There is a large car park at Place Victor Carrier, which is the primary school square in the village of Sillans.

(S/E) Leave the primary school square by taking Rue Centrale, passing in front of a pharmacy. Take the first street on your left, Rue du Docteur Jollans.

(1) You will come to a traffic light. Cross the D519 and take Rue Joseph Beret opposite. You will pass two small streets on your right.

(2) You will reach Rue de la Voie Ferrée, where the railway tracks are still in place on the right. Turn right onto this street. You will pass a series of gymnastics equipment. Take the first path on your left, which is half grass and half gravel. After two fairly sharp bends, take the first gravel path on your right. You will pass a large concrete manhole covered by a small sign: brine pipeline. Continue on. You will reach a T-junction. Turn right and follow the yellow markings. You will arrive at a crossroads where you should follow the yellow markings on the right.

(3) You will return to Rue de la Voie Ferrée, where the railway tracks have disappeared. Turn left onto this street. It is a beautiful, straight, wide road with a gentle slope. You will come to a paved road, which you should take on the right.
Be careful here as there is traffic and no pavement.
Pass the first alley on the left, Rue du Grand Champ, and further on, also on the left, take Rue Pascal, a one-way street except for residents.

(4) You will come to a stop sign. Cross the D519 again and continue straight ahead. When you reach a small square with a bench, make a zigzag turn first right then left to continue walking south, i.e. towards the centre of Izeaux. After passing one of the last shoe manufacturers in the area, you will come to a square overlooking the area. Take the small stairs opposite and go through the narrow corridor that leads to a series of garages. Turn right.

(5) You will arrive at Rue Jean Jaurès. Keep slightly to the left to enter the square in front of you, opposite the post office and the Maison des Associations. At the end, on the left, you will see a small, inconspicuous staircase. Go up it, pass through the porch and go down a narrow street on the right. It leads to Quai Jacquard, which you take on the left. To help you: you will now see a small canalised stream on your right.
When you reach a fork with a no-entry sign, turn right onto Rue Sully. This is the only real hill on the walk, but don't worry, every centimetre you climb will be descended further on. At a T-junction, turn right, still on Rue Sully. As promised, after a while, the road descends very steeply.

(6) After two right/left turns, you will return to the plain and take a beautiful stone path on the left marked with yellow signs. This path runs along the hill to Sillans. You will pass a beautiful pond: La Planche d'Enfer, which is unfortunately private.

(7) Shortly after the pond, you will come to a crossroads with five paths. Ignore the one on the left, which goes up the hill, and the one on the right, which leads to the plain. You are left with two paths in front of you. Take the one on the right. Quite quickly, you will see the Château de Sillans between the trees on your right, in front of you.

(8) You will see two signs for Le Moulin - Alt. 409m, 30 metres apart. At the first sign, continue straight ahead. At the second sign, take the road on your right.
Please note: there is no pavement and traffic moves quite quickly.

(9) You will pass in front of the castle, notable for its well-preserved keep. Then take the first street on your left, Rue du Docteur Guyonnet, then the first on your right, Rue de la République, to return to the starting point. (S/E).

Notes

The walk starts in Sillans, a small village in central Isère, between Rives and Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs.
Note: this walk can easily be combined with this one to create a more challenging walk of around 16 km, which also has very little elevation gain. In this configuration, you should allow around 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Worth a visit

During the first part of the walk, you will enjoy numerous views of the Chartreuse mountains.
You will cross the village of Izeaux, pass by the pretty Planche d'Enfer pond, and finish at the Château de Sillans and its keep, which are not open to visitors.

Very easy hike, lovely view of the Chartreuse mountains, but on the way back (dirt track) it was very muddy and slippery (a shame).
