Between Cruzille and Rampode in Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs

A fairly short walk which initially follows the Bièvre plain and the Chanclau Pond before climbing up into the moraine and the woods. The only difficulty is a fairly steep hill.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Leave the car park at Place Alexandre Gagneux. The town hall building is behind you. Turn left onto the small Rue du Général Vinoy, heading east. This street curves naturally to the right, leading onto the village’s main street (Rue Octave Chenavas). Turn left onto it.

(1) Go past the roundabout and follow Chemin de Morchamp, running parallel to the hill (for a while you’ll have the plain on your left and the hill on your right). When there are no more cottages on your left, take the path branching off to the left towards the very pretty Étang de Chanclau (signposted).

(2) Follow the path as it loops round to bring you back onto the road, which you continue along to the left. Follow the small road along the moraine for 1.7 km. Along the way, you’ll pass a junction (tarmac path to the left, dirt track to the right), a path branching off to the right, and another coming from the left (with a metal gate).

(3) Shortly after passing this track, you’ll come to another one, on the right this time, also with a metal gate, but a silver one. Take this track which climbs towards the moraine (despite the Yellow Cross). Initially, it runs alongside a meadow. At a fork, take the left-hand path. After a steep climb, you’ll reach a fairly wide clearing.

(4) At the fork, turn right again. The path starts to climb again and you’ll come out onto a wide, well-marked path.

(5) Turn right. The gradient levels out, and at one point you walk between two hedges of broom (which must be yellow when in bloom and must be very beautiful...).

(6) You come out onto a wide stony track again. You won’t realise it yet, but this is the Moilles forest track. Follow it, ignoring anything that might come from the right or left.

(7) When you reach a crossroads and see that the path opposite is blocked by a Yellow Cross, you head down to the right (if you go straight on, it doesn’t matter – the paths meet up again – but it’s easier to go right...).

(8) At the end of the path, you’ll come to a sign with its back to you. Once you’ve passed it, you’ll see “Chemin des Moilles” (I told you so...). Turn right. Further on, the path bends to the left (ignore the paths leading off to the right and straight ahead). You’ll pass through the hamlet of Patouly. You return to Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs

You come to a “Stop” sign and a no left turn sign. Ignore the no left turn sign and turn left anyway (but stay on the pavement!).

You are now on the main street. Walk past the Varanin house on your left (information board). Further on, you’ll reach the very elegant market halls; turn right to find your car park (S/E).

A very interesting route. Fortunately, I had the app, otherwise it would have been impossible. There were no markers, only one at the end! There were foresters and lots of felled trees. From point 5 to 6, it was impossible to get through the mud and water, so we made our way through the forest and arrived at the end of 6. The path was to the right and left, not straight ahead, so once again the app was a great help. When you reach the top, you have to turn right, so don't do this at the moment.

A lovely route was suggested on 20 November for a walk to support the Telethon. We have cleared the upper section of the route (between points 5 and 6), which had become very muddy and impassable following the passage of forestry machinery. Please note that the small path shown as a dotted line, which would have allowed you to avoid this section, no longer exists.
Beautiful autumn colours, lovely view over the Bièvre plain. An easy walk suitable for families.

A lovely walk I took to let my big dog run around

Ideal during heatwaves or hot weather; you spend 80–90% of the time in the shade amongst the trees, sometimes on damp paths. There are a few small streams in the wooded area, which is particularly welcome for the animals!

The route is very easy to walk and poses no difficulty at all for people
who are reasonably fit.

I recommend it; it’s a completely different landscape for me, living in Gillonnay with views of fields and more fields.

I even think this route could be tackled as a trail run or on a mountain bike.

PS: you can park by the small lake at the start of the walk, particularly and especially for those bringing their dogs, which is more pleasant as it saves them a total of 1.5 km through town

A short walk that allows you to explore Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Geoirs and its immediate surroundings.

You can also use the opportunity to scout out some mountain biking routes :-)
