La Vallée des Vaux - The trail of the Crosses

For this hike, I had fun making this trail around the crosses and other statues in the Vallée des Vaux. Useful for discovering the beauty of the landscape.

Description of the walk

Arriving in St-Martin-sous-Montaigu, cross the village and turn right at the "Randonnées" car park sign.

Take the GR® via rue du Clos de Montaigu. When you reach the Reuchou crossroads, turn left, then right at the first junctiom (rue des Maronniers). At the crossroads, turn left, then right into rue du Clos. At the next crossroads, you can do a make a quick round trip to the cross on your left. Continue along rue de Suzeau.

At the junction with the D48, turn left. After about 100m, turn right. Follow the GR® along the edge of the vineyard. At a fork in the road(1) take the left-hand path (GR®), which enters the forest a little further on. After a bend to the right, turn left(2) following the GR® sign. After another right-hand bend, turn left again. Continue as far as the cross (hill 406). At the crossroads, go straight on for about 150m: you'll see a path on the right. Take this path and leave the GR®. The path takes you back downhill. When you see the statue, continue downhill to the right until you reach the grotto of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes(3). Climb back up to the statue(4) where there's a climbing wall.

Take the path in front of you, turn left and climb this path to the crossroads(5). At the crossroads, turn left and go down the path (be careful, it's very slippery in wet weather). At the crossroads(6), you reach St-Denis-de-Vaux. Turn left and take rue des plantes to the monument and the old cemetery. Then turn right(7) and take rue de la côte chalonnaise. At the junction, turn right onto rue du meix de la croix (you'll pass behind the church). At the crossroads, turn left into rue des Monestier, then left into rue du meix d'anteu. At the crossroads, follow rue du lavoir to the cross.

(8) At the cross, turn right onto the footpath (in wet weather, you can go straight ahead and turn right along the road). At the end of the path, turn right onto the road, then left at the next junction. Follow this road to the first house on the left.

(9) At the house, turn left and follow this path to the tarmac road to the north.

At a crossroads (10) take the path roughly opposite, which leads to a cross visible from the road. At the cross, follow the path to the left, which takes you to another cross and the cemetery. At the cemetery, take the D124 to the church. At the church, take the road on the right. At the next crossroads, turn right into rue de Blaisy, as far as the Savant cross. At the cross, turn right. At the next junction, turn left and take the grassy path that leads to the Orme cross(11). At the Croix de l'Orme, turn right.

After a short bend to the left on the path(12), take a path to the right before entering the forest and going along the vineyard. Go around the Château Beau hillside. You'll see a rock (pink/orange in color) and a cross above it(13) a path through undergrowth and then a clearing takes you up to the top of the rock and the Teu cross. Beautiful panorama over the valley. Descend along this path, then continue straight on:14:: to pick up a path that leads to a track. At the end of the path, turn right onto the tarmac road which takes you back to your starting point.

Hello,
I did this route in winter. The terrain was quite slippery and some of the paths a bit chaotic, but that's not what I'm commenting on, as it depends on the weather.
My negative points are more to do with the route. Some parts are very pleasant, particularly the first part up to the cross.
The detours around the cross are nice, but the rest is devoid of interest. A lot of the route is on tarmac roads, some paths are impassable because of brambles that force you to continue on the road, and there are no points of interest for the rest of the walk.
There were no signposts, so you had to keep your eyes on your mobile phone to avoid getting lost.
But the environment in the heart of the vineyards is nice on the whole.
So I'd give it a good overall mark, despite some frustration.
Thank you

A hike with no major difficulties, the ascent is made at the start, which can be done with the whole family. Little frequented, apart from the wine growers busy with the many vines along the way.

Very nice walk with beautiful views. Some orientation difficulties and the description does not match the map in some places.

A magnificent walk at this time of year, when the vines are dressed in red and gold. The scenery is splendid.
I got lost a lot, despite a fairly comprehensive description... and always found my way back, but probably not always on the right path.
I counted 14 crosses
I'd do it again!

A very pretty walk around the theme of the "Way of the Cross".
A great way to discover the Chalonnais region.
Be careful at the start to take the GR in the right direction (south). And the start is from the car park (we were a little hesitant about the description...).
At the end of the route, if you do the walk at the end of May, you may be lucky enough, like us, to be able to taste a few wild cherries!

Lovely walk but a few problems between point 3 and point 4, the path is closed, and at point 8 you have to continue along the road (path closed).
Beautiful views.

"At the junction with the D48, turn left. A hundred metres turn right. Follow the GR®, along the edge of the vineyard". --> I'd say the GR is more like thirty metres or fifty at the most.
Otherwise a very nice walk with some beautiful views.

Superb views at several points along the route. Linger a while at Saint Denis to admire the statues and the grotto, it's really pretty and well maintained. Congratulations to the municipality and the volunteers.

I've been looking to do a tour of the Vallée des Vaux for some time now, and I'm not disappointed The tour of Saint Denis de Vaux is very pleasant, it's a picturesque little village well worth the diversions, thanks to the author for the reliability of the route.

Thank you BARGER
To avoid losing the network, it's better to cache the route before setting off and then switch to aeroplane mode when hiking. This is something I do on Android, I don't know if it works the same way on an iPhone.

From the moment you leave the GR7 (between Waypoints 2 and 3) it's not easy to find the route. Then it's pointless to do the loop between Waypoints 6 and 8 (forget Waypoint 7). For the rest, the route on the IGN map and the GPS information are impeccable.
We didn't use the app for the whole hike because unfortunately it's no longer accessible if the iPhone is locked or and there are sections where there's no internet service. But perhaps we need to improve our use of the app.

You need to have a good sense of direction, and despite that, we missed a few stages.....
A few clarifications in places wouldn't hurt (like the wash-house)!
Otherwise, a magnificent route

The route is very reliable, and it's always nice to discover pretty spots like this, bearing in mind that I'm a native of the region.
