Description of the walk

Head to Orgeux and park on Chemin du Breuil, along the Norges, on the grass verge.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the village centre and take the first right onto Rue de la Noue until you reach the Orgeux wash house.

(1) Turn right onto a wide path which runs alongside the River Norges, keeping to the right. At the end of the path, at the junction with a cross-path, turn right and continue along the river. After a long walk, you will reach the edge of the woods and fields.

(2) Turn right onto the path that runs alongside a hedge, keeping to the right. It veers slightly to the left before coming out onto a stony cross-path.

(3) Turn right and follow this path all the way; at one point, it crosses the Norges.

(4) Ignore the paths running alongside the river, which branch off to the left, and continue straight ahead. Further on, veer left and follow, keeping to the right, a tributary of the Norges, very close to the motorway. Continue northwards for a long stretch until you reach a crossroads of tracks. To the right is a private access to the ponds; to the left, a path leading back to Saint-Julien.

(5) Take the path on the left until you reach La Norges at the end of the route. Turn right onto the white gravel path and follow it until it veers left just before crossing the river.

(6) Go straight on along the field path, which does not appear on the IGN map but is clearly marked and wide. It runs alongside La Norges, keeping to the left, and leads, at its end, onto a tarmac road. Turn left to enter the village of Saint-Julien.

(7) Follow Rue du Moulin, which passes in front of the local care home before veering right and then, immediately afterwards, turning left onto Rue de la Dame Blanche.
At the first junction, turn left onto Rue du Grand Pré. It bends twice to the right before reaching a four-way junction on the edge of the residential area.

(8) Head straight on towards the fields. This tarmac road leads to the village hall and sports grounds in Saint-Julien, which it passes in front of. At the main entrance to these facilities, you can cut across the meadow and a football training ground to reach the D 28d and cross it. Then turn left to leave the built-up area and take the first path on the right towards the woods.

(9) Continue along this track through the woods and along the edge of fields, as it gradually narrows into a path. Ignore any side tracks. After winding through a final wooded section, you’ll emerge onto a wide stony track almost at the edge of the woodland. You’ll come out at the edge of a wood.

(10) Turn left to continue along the edge of the woodland, reach its end and continue along the path through the fields; please note that this does not appear on the IGN map. Go round a small wood on the left, skirt a second one a little further on before following a fairly deep ditch all the way.

(11) In dry weather, you can cross this ditch to follow the marked boundary between a cultivated area and a fallow field. In wet weather, it is better to follow the original path to the edge of the woodland, where you will find a bridge over the ditch.

(12) Cross to the other side and retrace your steps along a path running parallel to the previous one, with the ditch on your right.
Return to the previous crossroads.

(11) Head south onto a white gravel path. Then turn left and follow it all the way until you reach the D 28d at the entrance to the town of Orgeux.

(13) Turn right onto Rue de l’Assomption and take the right-hand pavement. Cross the road and take thefirst left onto Rue de l’Abreuvoir.
Shortly afterwards, at the square with the boules court, keep to the right. This route takes you back to the wash house.

(1) From the wash house, return along the same route to the car park along the Norges (S/E).

Notes

Walking sticks may be useful in case of rain when walking along field and woodland paths.
Picnics are possible on the meadow next to the village hall and sports grounds in Saint-Julien.

Worth a visit

(1) The Orgeux wash house,
From (4) to (6), the banks of the Norges are very pleasant in places, depending on the weather,
(7) Option to take a detour to explore the centre of Saint-Julien, the church, the Pont-Neuf and the wash house, which features a weir with five water regulation mechanisms.
Throughout the walk: observe nature near the water sources and, with a bit of luck, some wildlife.

The first part of this walk, up to Saint-Julien, is very pleasant along field paths and riversides. After Saint-Julien, the section through the woods is much less pleasant; the path is hard to follow due to very tall grass (make sure you have tick repellent), undergrowth and brambles. The subsequent paths through the fields are uneven with ruts, so not great for the knees! In short, the second part spoils the enjoyment of this walk, which started off rather well. What a shame!

We thought we’d avoid hunting grounds by choosing this walk, which is situated fairly close to villages, in the middle of fields and with very few wooded areas, but we were very disappointed to find, shortly after point 9, a sign in the middle of the path indicating that hunting was in progress, forcing us to head back via the main road!
However, at the start, the banks of the Norge were pleasant. We chose to avoid point 5 to stay along the riverbank.

Although very pleasant and varied, waypoints 11–12–13 weren’t very clear to us (you have to go as far as the bridge and then turn back to avoid having to cross the stream).
