The six-pond circuit from Dieuze

The Saulnois region is often described as the “Land of Salt and Ponds”. This description is well-deserved, and this route features nearly six ponds. Apart from the Étang des Essarts, which has been developed, the others are managed by the Lorraine Nature Conservancy and are completely unspoilt. Here you’ll discover a rich variety of wildlife, vegetation and colours that bear witness to a protected environment. The picnic area by the side of the main road is halfway along the route and can prove very useful.

Description of the walk

Large car park in Dieuze, Chemin du Fort at the Étang des Essarts.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take Chemin du Fort to the edge of the forest. Turn right onto the path ahead. This leads you to the dyke of Étang Voite. Continue on to rejoin Chemin du Fort (a section of the path is not shown on maps but does exist).

(1) After 500 m, take the path on your right to reach the Étang des Soeurs Grises. Then turn back and take the Chemin du Fort on your right until the junction with the Route Forestière du Chemin Noir, which you follow on your left for 400 m.

(2) Turn right onto the path ahead. It takes you straight to the vicinity of the Osterweiher pond. To reach the dam, take a path on your left. Then turn back and continue along the path you have just rejoined. You will walk alongside the pond for about 500 m – which you can see through the trees – until you reach a fork.

(3) Turn left and walk for 300 m to reach a junction with a wide forest road.

(4) Turn left onto the first track. After 600 m, it turns almost at a right angle to the right. Continue along the track until you reach the D999 road.

(5) Cross the road with care (heavy traffic) to reach the Route Forestière du Champ de Tir directly in front of you. Follow it. After 700 m, at the junction, you will see the Étang de Lindre ahead of you. You have reached theGR®5, which you then take to the right. After 650 m, you will reach a large picnic area on the edge of the D199.

(6) Turn right and walk along the side of the road for 460 m.

(7) Turn right onto a wide path leading into the Bois du Commandeur. After 600 m, this takes you to the dyke of the Étang des Graviottes. After 150 m, you come out onto the D999, which you cross again with care to take the path in front of you. This will lead you to the old railway line.

(8) Just before the railway line, which is flanked by steep embankments, take a short detour to join it at its start, thus avoiding having to descend a very steep slope. Then take the old railway line on the right.

(4) At the junction on the way there, continue straight on until you reach the Route Forestière du Chemin Noir.

(9) At the crossroads, continue straight on and, at the fork, take the path on your left. After 400 m, at a junction, turn right and head towards the banks of the Étang des Essarts (where there is a fitness trail). Make your way to the pond’s embankment (a well-signposted and well-maintained area) and continue.

(10) At the end of the dyke, turn right along the barracks and return to the starting point (S/E).

A pleasant route, with no particular difficulties, but you’ll need the satellite track if you don’t want to go round in circles.
Hunting is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so it’s best to go on a Friday or at the weekend!

A pleasant walk with several possible variations. Don't hesitate to take a detour via Tarquinpoll

A lovely walk. Long, straight stretches on paths that get quite muddy in wet weather.
Some lovely ponds along the way, one of which has been drained.
This route can be done on foot or even by mountain bike.

A lovely, peaceful walk, mostly through woodland, with a few delightful surprises along the way: clearings, wild ponds, or beautifully landscaped spots...
However, this route requires dry weather, as some paths become impassable in wet conditions.
The route has clearly been designed by someone who knows this forest and its secret little paths very well. Follow the route in the direction indicated and stay alert at the turns. You can start from point 6 and then pop over to Tarquimpol to visit the Maison du Pays des Étangs and its new little Bistrot des Oiseaux!

A peaceful stroll through woods and past ponds. The terrain is fairly flat, with no difficult sections. We were there at just the right time to see a wealth of mushrooms 🍄. A lovely route.

The starting point is a very small village where there are no parking spaces for cars and
the cemetery is well hidden.
But the route itself is lovely for a short walk.
