The villages of Ley and Bezange-la-Petite, starting from Moncourt

A circular walk through the Saulnois plain to visit the villages of Moncourt, Ley and Bezange-la-Petite, with 360° views from all the high points along the walk. This is an area where you can find remnants of the two world wars: 1914–18 and 1940–44.

Description of the walk

Parking available in front of Moncourt church.

(S/E) Opposite the church entrance, head straight east along Rue Principale.

(1) On leaving the village, take the first small road on the right, which turns into a stony track.

(2) At the end of the stony track, turn left onto the field path and take the three 90° bends in succession.

(3) At elevation 252, join a track and continue right along the field path, turning 90° at elevation 231.

(4) At elevation 245, take the track to the right until the end of the small wood to see two blockhouse heads and the blockhouse in the field. Retrace your steps and continue to the right towards the village of Ley, passing the wayside cross.

(5) At Rue Principale, turn left and pass a memorial stone, the church and the fountain.

(6) At the bend in the D22, take the small road on the right and, at the Y-junction with the wayside cross, continue right onto the stony track. Pass a small pond, continue along the field path and take the three 90° bends.

(7) At the stony track, turn left (300°) onto the field path and, at the first path, turn right and continue straight on to reach the village of Bezange-la-Petite. Pass the statue of the Virgin Mary, the church and the town hall.

(8) At the crossroads in the centre of the village, turn left onto Route de Moncourt and continue straight on along this small road until you reach the second section of the Bois de Moncourt.

(9) Enter the woods via a small path on the right to see the remains of the First World War (trenches and gun emplacements), retrace your steps and continue along the small road which leads onto the D22.

(10) Follow it to the left and continue straight on to reach the church (S/E).

Notes

The return journey between Bezange-la-Petite and Moncourt is via the small road, as the field path leading back up to Removal has been ploughed.

The German blockhouses from the First World War in the small Bois du Haut de Foux in Ley.

A trench area and most certainly battery emplacements, remnants of the First World War, in the Bois de Moncourt.
