Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the roadside running alongside the old fortifications.

(S/E) Head to the first junction and turn north to leave Marsal via the D38a towards Haraucourt-sur-Seille. Cross the Seille.

(1) Cross the main road, first turning right then left to reach the village of Haraucourt-sur-Seille via the D38b.

(2) Cross, veering to the left, and in the centre of the village take the path heading north-east. Follow the tarmac road, which turns into a dirt track. On the right, behind the yellow fields of rapeseed (in spring), note the village of Saint-Médard.

(3) At the edge of the forest, head up the MTB route, going against the direction of traffic. Be careful, as the climb is quite steep.

(4) At the top, follow the Route Forestière de la Haute Charrière to the right (east) for about 1 km.

(5) Turn left onto the path marked by the Chêne du Roi.

(6) At the bottom of the small valley, you can rest at the foot of the Chêne du Roi. Head back up the opposite side.

(7) Follow the ridge on your left. You will rejoin the Haute Charrière Forest Road.

(4) Follow it westwards this time to reach the hamlet of La Justice.

(8) Turn left (south-west) to reach the Pont Martin crossroads.

(9) Go straight on along the Salival Forest Road, which gradually leads you out of the forest and into the meadow. Enjoy the view of this little valley amidst the meadows.

(10) At the end of the path, you’ll reach the old Salival Abbey.

(11) Turn left and tackle one final climb. You’ll emerge in front of the Saint-Livier Chapel.

(12) Continue along the path, which turns into a track. Follow the track marked “Côte Saint Jean” alongside a sheep pasture.

(13) There is a small gate between the barbed wire on the left of the path. Make sure you close it properly when entering the park. Enjoy the view and the orientation table. Below, you can see the village of Marsal and its Mare Salée. Walk along the southern boundary of the park to the main gate (south-east of the park).

(14) Follow the dirt track to the main road, cross it and continue straight on towards Marsal, following theGR®5marked in red and white.

(15) Cross the D38 and reach the entrance to the village of Marsal via La Porte de France, with the Salt Museum behind it.

(16). Do not enter the village but take the path to the left of the gate to continue along the boardwalk. The path is one-way only.

(17) La Mare Salée: you can rest here thanks to the facilities (benches). At the end of this path, return directly to the starting point. Alternatively, cross the village to see its old buildings by following the dirt track behind the church (to do this, head south and cut through the village using the church as a landmark). You’ll come to a small amphitheatre.

(18) Head north again as you leave the amphitheatre, going through the tunnel and back through the village towards the starting point (S/E).

The walk is interesting overall. The valley leading up to the monastery is stunning. However, you should be aware that the final section of the walk needs to be altered as it is far too difficult to navigate! From point 14 onwards, the ‘path’ is virtually impassable as it has not been maintained. You’re practically walking through a field. My tracksuit was full of twigs, leaves and grass stalks. A nightmare. So yes, the view is superb from this “path”, but walking along it is a disaster. So, on the ground with the orienteering map, you cannot follow the recommended route (a sign indicates that you must turn back and consequently follow the main path leading downhill).

So you can no longer follow the route recommended on the map, and I ended up back on the road 300 metres to the west (i.e. at La Banvoire). So I repeat: don’t go that way; in any case, I advise against following the last part of the walk.

At the abbey, continue straight on, then turn left to head back towards Marsal.

I led a group on this very interesting route.
I left out the circular loop that goes to the Chêne du Roi. It’s very difficult to access, the path is overgrown and it really needs signposting.
Getting out of the oak’s vicinity is just as tricky; you can easily end up going round in circles.
It’s a shame because the tree is very impressive; some signposting and a few markers would be enough.

A lovely walk. In the Bride National Forest, there are so many fallen trees and logging operations (for example, near the Chêne du Roi) that you need to pay close attention to your GPS route to find your way.
I recommend a visit to the Salt Museum.
I almost forgot: there’s no longer a café in Marsal; it’s up for sale.

A lovely walk,
first part through the woods
second part in open country
no water along the route
in Marsal at the starting point there are tables, benches, BBQs and toilets available; there is also an inn on the Place d’Armes near the Town Hall
Ideally, you should park in Hampon and head to point 8 so you can stop for a bite to eat in Marsal

Hello,
We walked part of this route, starting from point 11, coming from the place known as Les Railloux and the GR.
Note that at this point the gate was closed to all traffic, with a ‘Private property, no entry’ sign. It appears you cannot walk along this road.
At point 13, we followed the GPS route; at the spring, a large sign stated “Private property”; we went as far as the orientation table. From there, the path ended, and a sign indicated we should turn back.
The instruction at point 13 to “follow the southern boundary of the park to the main gate” was not feasible. We chose to follow the GPS route, which led us across the meadows to the exit gate.
Were we on private property?
It would be a shame not to be able to reach the orientation table, which appears to be in the middle of a private field!
I think that from the orientation table, the only option is to head down towards Les Plantes to rejoin the GR.
No hard feelings, as the site is very beautiful, especially with these lovely autumn colours!
