The plain on the Saint-Maurice de Laurençanne side

A pleasant hike in the plains around the Seugne and Laurençanne rivers, starting from Saint-Maurice de Laurençanne. This route allows you to discover a variety of plains landscapes, as well as the foothills on which the village of Vibrac is built.

Description of the walk

The parking area is located in the car park next to the church.

(S/E) Leave the car park via Rue de la Métairie and turn right onto Route de Chaunac. Pass the junction with the D253 road on your left. Immediately turn right onto Chemin des Chareillons.
Leave the village and continue along this small road until you reach a three-way junction.

(1) Turn left onto the small road, which quickly turns into a farm track heading north-east. Continue straight ahead until you pass a small stream, marked by the trees lining it on the left-hand side, just before the D153 road.

(2) Turn right onto the grassy track that runs alongside the stream for a while before turning left and moving away from it.
Further on, the farm track passes by a small isolated hangar which is a microlight base (see the stickers on the hangar).
The track soon reaches a small road at a T-junction. Turn left onto the small road, which passes under a high-voltage power line and arrives at a place called Chez Bardon, with a fine example of traditional architecture on the left and a farm on the right.

(3) Turn right to pass in front of the farm and its agricultural buildings on your left.
At the junction with the D134 road, cross carefully and continue straight ahead on the small road that runs alongside a wood on your left before crossing the Seugne.

(4) At the first right-hand bend, take the small road that branches off to the left (north) towards Moulin de la Prée. When the small road makes a right-angle turn to the right, turn left onto the farm track: there are actually two farm tracks serving cultivated plots, including pastures. Personally, I opted for the one that follows the small branch of the Seugne river on the left and keeps the Moulin de la Prée site in view on the right. The two farm tracks meet about a kilometre further on before crossing another branch of the Moulin de la Prée river (see map, which shows the left-hand track) .

After passing through the hamlet of L'Ésois, the track crosses a final branch of the river on the right via a bridge and joins another track at a T-junction right next to a small wood in the hamlet of Les Terres Froides. Turn left and, shortly afterwards, you will come to a three-way junction with the hamlet of La Motte on the right a short distance away.

(5) Turn left onto the farm track heading west. Turn right immediately after the small stream and continue north to the D253E3 road. When you reach the road, turn left and cross the bridge over the Seugne.

(6) Shortly afterwards, turn left onto a farm track that runs alongside the riverbed some distance away.
Continue straight ahead until you reach a T-junction of farm tracks (the route has returned to the west of the other side of the Seugne, as the footbridge known as the "Pont des Rois" mentioned on the map no longer exists).

(7) Turn right onto a good farm track which turns into a small road a little further on. Cross the D134 road carefully and continue straight ahead towards the hamlet of Barbegillet.

(8) At the crossroads in Barbegillet, turn left towards Logis des Rois, which you will leave on your left. The road gives way to a farm track that curves sharply to the right as it approaches Laurençanne, then runs alongside it at a distance.

(9) At the next farm track junction, turn left, cross the Laurençanne and continue to the hamlet of La Brande, which you will cross from one side to the other.

(10) At the T-junction, turn right onto the road that crosses a small wood before reaching the junction with the D253.

(11) Turn left onto the road (Route de Fontaines) and continue to Saint-Maurice de Laurençanne.
When you reach the village, turn right at the junction with the D153 (Route de Tugéras).
Shortly afterwards, the route rejoins the car park on the left next to the church (S/E).

Notes

This hike over varied terrain requires suitable footwear.

This route, which presents no particular difficulties, is not marked. However, it crosses and passes over sections of marked routes. It is therefore advisable to follow the directions in the description and on the map, combined with reading the landscape, which is easy in this area. In particular, there are several places where the route passes yellow cross markings, which usually indicate a path that should not be taken.

Worth a visit

La Seugne

The Seugne rises at the foot of the 142-metre-high hill of Montlieu-la-Garde, near the hamlet of Chez Bourdeau, at an altitude of 102.5 metres. It originates in the canton of Montlieu-la-Garde, then crosses the cantons of Montendre, Jonzac, Saint-Genis-de-Saintonge, Pons, Gémozac and finally flows into the canton of Saintes-Est.
The Seugne has eighteen tributaries or branches, including:
the upper Seugne (upstream Seugne)
the Moulinasse stream (right bank) 2.8 km
the Oil stream (right bank) 1.4 km
the Olonne stream (right bank) 4.3 km
the Voine stream (right bank) 1.2 km
Pontignac stream (right bank) 5.9 km
La Pimperade stream (right bank) 13.4 km
Laurançanne Stream (right bank) 10.5 km
The Pharaon stream (right bank) 18.5 km with a tributary, the Mathelon.

It is in its middle course that the river flows through the small towns of Jonzac, the sub-prefecture, and Pons.

The Laurençanne

The Laurençanne stream flows into the Seugne, which in turn feeds into the Charente.

Saint-Maurice de Laurençanne

On 31 December 1974, the commune of Tugéras merged with that of Saint-Maurice-de-Laurençanne. The new commune thus created took the name of Tugéras-Saint-Maurice. The operation was made official by a publication in the Journal officiel on 24 January 1975.

The former priory of Saint-Maurice de Laurençanne houses a bronze bell dating from 1629, which has been classified as a historic monument since 1911.

Tugéras

The Church of the Assumption, in the village of Tugéras, dates from the 12th and 15th centuries. The ornate portal dates from the 16th century. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1935, with the exception of the bell tower, whose spire dates from the 19th century.
This church contains six silver-plated copper candlesticks from the first quarter of the 19th century. They have been listed as historical monuments since 10 November 1980.
Dating from the same period and also listed since 1980, the painted and gilded wooden altar was restored by Jean-Louis Dufon in 2002 and 2003, particularly the iconographic elements (Saint Peter and Saint Paul).
