The Ungersberg via Albéville

In Alsatian, Ungersberg means the ‘Mountain of the Hungarians’: the highest sandstone massif in the Val de Villé, situated between the mountains and the Alsatian plain. The ascent and descent of the Ungersberg, along rocky paths, is quite steep; walking poles and good footwear will be a great help. The Club Vosgien has erected the Héring Tower at its summit, offering a sweeping view of the Alsace plain and the neighbouring peaks.

Description of the walk

Parking is available below the “Parc and Spa les Cigognes Albéville” hotel complex (a former holiday village converted into a hotel complex).

(S/E) With your back to the hotel complex, carefully walk down Rue du Meisenbuckel, heading west towards Albé. There are no pavements, so you’ll need to walk a few hundred metres on the tarmac. Leave the road and take the path up to the left.

(1) Walk downhill on the left past the small Albé Aerodrome and, via Rue de la Schrann, join Rue d’Albéville (Blue Disc signposting). Follow Rue d’Albéville (Blue Disc signposting) downhill.

(2) Leave the road and follow the path to the left, which then becomes Rue de la Fontaine. Just before this, there is a beautiful postcard view of the village in the foreground and the vineyards in the background. Followthe path to the junction of Rue de l’Erlebach and Rue de la Fontaine.Cross carefully towards the town hall and the church of Albé opposite.

(3) Turn right and follow Rue du Baechling. Follow the path uphill to the left, marked with a Red Saltire and Green Disc. Pass the junction and the wayside shrine on the left, with a bench under the trees.

(4) Follow the forest path on the right, the “Eselweg” (Donkey Path), marked with a red-white-red Red Rectangle, for a lovely climb up to the Col de Bellevue, 749m.

(5) Follow the Blue Triangle and Yellow Saltire markings to the right, downhill, before a lovely climb to the Col de l’Ungersberg, 676m.

(6) Turn left and then immediately right, following the Red Rectangle and Yellow Ring markings, for a lovely climb that zigzags between the rocks and trees.

(7) Climb to the Héring Tower , 901m, with views over the valley (platform accessible via an iron staircase) and, in good weather, you can clearly see as far as the Black Forest. At the foot of the tower, there is a table with uncovered benches; there is some shelter available under the tower in the event of heavy rain. Descend via a path beneath the fir trees, in the opposite direction to the ascent, heading south, following the Yellow Ring markings, until you reach the junction with the Chemin Forestier du Sommet, at a clearing (table and benches).

(8) Follow this forest road to the right, marked with Yellow Rings and Red-White-Red signs, to the old car park (still shown on maps, but no longer in existence; furthermore, the access roads have been closed to motor traffic; table and benches covered in moss).

(9) Ignore the Red Cross markings, which go uphill to the right, but continue along the road that descends to the left, then turn right onto a slight incline for a few dozen metres, following the Yellow Saltire markings.

(10) Take the path on the left, downhill, following the Red Cross markings.

(11) Cross the Ungersberg Forest Road, continue to follow the Red Cross markings and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The Ungersberg was made famous by the first major peasant uprising in Germany in 1493: the Bundschuh (named after the lace-up shoe, as opposed to the lords’ boots). The forest would witness the gathering of 200 to 400 peasants representing the surrounding villages, led by Hans Ullmann of Sélestat and Jakob Hauser of Blienschwiller.
They demanded the abolition of levies, taxes and customs duties, along with a whole series of measures aimed at making their lives fairer and more equitable. They planned to occupy Sélestat. The plot was uncovered and the ringleaders, captured after a second meeting in Villé, were executed. This conspiracy foreshadowed the events that would mark the 16th century with the ‘Peasants’ War’ (1525). This year marks the 500th anniversary!(2025)

There are various circular routes, all of them interesting, leading up to the Ungersberg: via Andlau, Reichsfeld, Howarth and Le Hohwald; the one described above includes the pretty village of Albé. Completed and approved in April 2025 by the Branquignols (the famous group of epicurean Alsatian hiking friends)

A beautiful hike that wasn't very busy despite it being a Sunday in July. No difficulty and shaded by trees 90% of the time. Between points 7 and 8, I lost the trail without noticing and had to make a very steep descent to reach point 8. Other than that, nothing to report.

A route that doesn’t seem to be very popular, but is nonetheless very interesting.

A lovely circular route offering stunning views of the Albé vineyards. The view from the summit of the Ungersberg takes in the Alsace plain. The climb is steep but manageable if you take your time. The various paths are very pleasant, and there are benches and picnic tables dotted along the route. We didn’t meet many people on this beautiful Saturday in May.
