Élancèze from the Col du Pertus

This is a fairly easy short hike to a beautiful promontory offering a panoramic view of the main Monts du Cantal and the Jordanne and Cère valleys.

Description of the walk

Go to the Col du Pertus pass between Mandailles-Saint-Julien on the Jordanne side and Saint-Jacques-de-Blats on the Cère side, on the D317, and park in the pass car park.

(S/E) Head south-west and go through the gate in the fence to access the path. Follow it through alternating copses and clearings.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the main path, which is much more clearly marked. Follow this very passable path and enter the forest.
Pass a first wolf trap (on the left) that is being restored, then a second one (on the right) with a wooden guardrail.

(2) High up on a tree, a handmade sign points to the left towards a "shortcut" to a stopover lodge. Take the path on the right, which continues to climb, gently at first and then more steeply.
Continue through the undergrowth until you reach the edge of the forest, where the path becomes steeper and rockier for the last few metres.

(3) A few metres after the last trees, the path reaches a pass facing a fence. Take the path on the right and continue climbing, following the fence (on the left) to the next pass.
At this second pass, take the path on the right again and continue to the summit of Élancèze a few metres away.

(4) At the summit of Élancèze, after admiring the view, turn around and return to Col du Pertus via the same route in reverse (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources along the route.

Very poor signposting and almost no signposts. It is advisable to have a map and GPS for better orientation, especially in the forest section. However, the risk of getting lost is very low (if in doubt, choose the path that goes uphill!).

In the forest, some sections can be a bit muddy (springs) and a makeshift path sometimes bypasses these areas.

From the summit of Élancèze, a path leads directly down to (1). It is not very visible, not signposted and quite steep (especially at the start) from what I could see.

Worth a visit

Hike done in July, beautiful shaded walk, relatively easy except for the last climb which leaves you panting when you arrive, but what a view, it's splendid, 360° and the Salers!
You can extend the hike by going quite far along the ridges.

As the route is short, after descending from Puy de l'Elancèze (a beautiful spot with a 360° view), we continued along the GR400 to Puy de la Poche and made a round trip.

After the wolf traps (oh, the poor creatures!), the climb continues, mostly through forest. Then, as you leave the forest, still climbing, you reach a pass with a "rounded" peak on the left and, on the right, the climb up to Elancèze. A superb viewpoint, it was raining intermittently and clouds were rising from the valley, giving the site a mysterious feel. Very beautiful panoramic views!

A beautiful hike, not difficult. As I suffer from vertigo, I couldn't manage the last 30 metres to the summit, but there is a platform just before the end where you can admire the superb panorama.
