Puy de l'Usclade from Col du Pertus

Puy de l'Usclade is little known, but offers a beautiful view of Puy Griou and the other surrounding peaks. The first part of the walk, up to Col de Gliziou, is easy and shaded, and fairly busy, while the second part is less frequented and ends with a steeper section.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park at Col du Pertus, which can be reached from Mandailles-Saint-Julien or Saint-Jacques-des-Blats.

(S/E) From the pass, follow the GR® 400 (white and red markings) north-east to an intersection.

(1) Continue on the GR® slightly to the right, through the woods until you reach a track.

(2) Continue in the same direction on the GR® which goes around the Puy de l'Usclade to the east. A few clearings allow you to see the cone of Puy Griou straight ahead. You will reach a small pass at an altitude of 1362 metres.

(3) At this pass, leave theGR® and take the green-marked path on the left that climbs uphill (towards Puy Griou via Usclade). You will reach an intersection.

(4) Leave the green markings and take the path opposite, which climbs steeply along the Usclade ridge.
This steep path passes through a small scree slope before reaching Puy de l'Usclade (altitude 1498).

(5) Return via the same route you took on the way up.

(2) Don't forget to leave the track for the path on the left to reach the Col de Pertus (S/E).

Following Visorando's route, there were no problems.
The start of the hike is easy, the end a little difficult but short. The first few steep slopes are followed by flat sections that allow you to recover.
It was very hot, but there is shade until you reach the scree, and there were flying ants, so we didn't stay long at the summit! It's a shame because the view is 360°.
You can see Le Griou regularly, and there were a lot more people on that side.
It's easy to find a tree trunk for a picnic.

An easily accessible summit offering beautiful views of the Cantal mountains.
The climb from the Col du Pertus is very pleasant, with only the last 500 metres being a little steeper.
Be sure to follow the correct trail (GR) when leaving the woods; keep left to descend gradually towards the trail leading to the Col du Gliziou (avoid the trail on the right that passes by a tree and some ruins).

A very beautiful hike in good weather, accessible and well marked. The view from Puy de l'Usclade is superb. The very end of the route is over rocks and requires particular care.

A beautiful hike in the morning in very nice weather and warm temperatures. Most of the route is through the forest, shaded by trees. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. I would say that the hike is easy except for the last 50 metres, which climb a little among the rocks and require some caution. At the summit, there is a magnificent view of the Puys Griou and Marie and the Jordanne valley. It took us 1 hour and 5 minutes to climb up and a little less than 1 hour to climb down (not counting the stop at the summit).

A superb short hike that starts gently in the forest. Beautiful landscapes and varied views with the Griou mountain ever-present. Lots of flowers (in June) and few people.
If you're prone to vertigo, the small scree slope at the end isn't too bad and is quite short.
Thanks to the author for this very nice hike, which, curiously, is not mentioned in the guidebooks.

Beautiful views, varied landscapes (moors, undergrowth, wet meadows) and vistas of Puy Griou, which dominates with its dark grey cone.
A few showers enhanced the colours and provided beautiful contrasts for the photos!
... I stopped at the scree slope... just before the summit... and felt a little dizzy.

Excellent hiking idea. Very interesting and fairly easy. The approach walk is through the woods on very good, gently sloping paths. Only the last 50 metres of elevation gain are steeper, with some rock climbing in the final metres. But you are rewarded with an extraordinary 360° panorama over the entire Mandailles valley, and the peaks of the Cère valley as a bonus. Woods, meadows, ridges, peaks: it's just superb.

I couldn't resist the urge to continue on to the summit of Griounou (add 1½ hours round trip). Nice, but not as good as Usclade: the climb is exposed and the view less spectacular.
