Jordanne Valley from the Col du Pertus

From the Col du Pertus, discover the village of Mandailles and the hamlets of Larmandie and Liadouze on the banks of the Jordanne. On both the outward and return journeys, gaps in the forest offer beautiful views of the valley, the Chavaroche and Puy Mary massifs, as well as the Gliziou and Puy Griou.

Description of the walk

On the D317 between Saint-Jacques-des-Blats and Mandailles, park at the Col du Pertus, in a small car park on the south side of the road (on the left coming from Saint-Jacques). See Practical Information for some updates.

(S/E) Cross the road and head north-east towards Puy Griou on a path markedGR®® Red and White.

(1) At the crossroads, continue on theGR®® on the left towards Mandailles. At a fork (with a path not shown on the map), continue left on the GR®®. You will arrive at a wide path.

(2) Follow it to the left. Further on, the path leaves the forest and offers views of the Jordanne valley, then joins the road. Follow this road to the right until you reach the information sign about the valley and the landscape, then continue on the path to the right, always following theGR®® markings. Further on, ignore a grassy path on the left that is not shown on the map.

(3) At a crossroads, leave theGR®® and turn left, slightly into a hairpin bend.
This path is lined with beautiful beech trees, some of which are twisted and gnarled.
At a buron (a hut in a meadow), turn left, following the mountain bike signs. Continue to follow these signs, ignoring a path on the right that curves sharply (not shown on the map). Immediately after, cross a footbridge (you are still on the mountain bike trail!).
This sunken path, which leads to meadows where Salers cows graze, is still lined with beautiful trees.

(4) The path turns right as it crosses the Ruisseau de Larmandie. At the next fork in the path, keep right (mountain bike signpost VTT3 and PR® Bleu). Continue down this beautiful stony path to reach Larmandie.

(5) In this hamlet, you will come to a street with a blacksmith's shop on the left. Follow the street to the right to cross the Ruisseau de Larmandie, then take the path on the left marked VTT. At the next intersection, follow the signs for Mandailles on the left. The path runs alongside the stream and then joins a road (D17).

Follow the road to the left for a round trip to the church. On the way back, follow a path to the left just after passing a cross and the stream. This path joins the banks of the Jordanne, then turns right towards the village of Mandailles. It joins the road at the bridge.

(6) Follow the road to the left, crossing the Jordanne for a short loop through the village, then return.

(6) On the way back, after crossing the Jordanne again, continue straight ahead on the road, take the path between the playground and the Maison de Site de Mandailles, marked PR® Blue and Green. Immediately after, climb up to the left to join a small road and follow it to the left.

At the junction with a path coming from the right, leave theGR® signs and continue straight ahead towards Puy Griou. Further on, ignore a path on the left and pass a iron cross. At a bend in the road, pass a beautiful carved stone cross and a fountain, then arrive at the hamlet of Liadouze. Leave a beautiful cross on the left and continue.

(7) Follow this direction, then take the path on the right, marked in green, pass in front of the oven, and continue on this path which makes a wide right turn. Cross the Ruisseau du Luc on a footbridge and shortly afterwards you will come to a path marked by theGR®®400. Follow this path to the left, which offers beautiful views of the valley. Pass a reservoir before arriving at an intersection with signs for Mandailles and Col du Pertus.

(8) Leave theGR®® and continue straight ahead, ignoring these directions and following discreet orange markings. Further on, ignore a path on the left (not shown on the map) and continue to follow the orange markings.

(9) At a sign indicating the direction of Mandailles, turn left (no markings). When you reach a crossroads, turn right onto a path marked VTT3. At another sign indicating the direction of Mandailles, ignore a path on the right. You will arrive at a logging area, then on a path.

(10) Follow it to the left (no signposting immediately, but orange signposting a little further on). Further on, ignore a grassy path on the left. You will then come to a junction with a path marked GR®®.

(11) Follow it to the right towards Col du Pertus. At a fork just after, follow theGR®® to the right. Further on, go through a gate. The path then offers beautiful views of Puy Griou, then Chavaroche and Puy Mary.

As the trail crosses a beech forest, follow the GR®® markings carefully. You will arrive at the edge of a meadow. The trail goes around it on the right. Further on, go through a gate. You will return to the intersection you took on the way there.

(1) Reach the Col du Pertus by following the same path as on the way there to the left (S/E).

At the start, there is a small change: the car park is no longer at the top of the pass (there is a picnic area instead) but before the pass on the left
  • the GR® no longer passes through the pass but exits at the end of the car park and crosses the road opposite the signpost
  • at the point (4) just after the buron, take the wide path on the right and cross the stream via the recent wooden bridge

Minor changes to signage along the route:
- at point 3, once you reach the buron, go to the left and pass in front of its entrance. Reach the mountain bike trail, which is currently closed (sign with a red cross through it) and is a good downhill trail marked with blue PR signs after passing through a mobile fence (stake). Here, the path is once again open to mountain bikes. Follow it downhill, following the VTT3 sign to reach point 4.
- at point 4, continue to follow the VTT3 and blue PR signs.
- at point 6, take the path between the playground and the Site de Mandailles house. Follow the blue and green PR markings to reach a small road as indicated, but not marked GR400.
In the hamlet of Liadouze, there is no sign indicating the communal oven. Follow the green PR signs on the right in the middle of the hamlet to pass in front of the oven as indicated at point 7.
- at point 9, it should read: "When you reach a crossroads, turn right..." Then, at the end of the paragraph: "You will arrive at a logging area and then on a path." The logging area is clearly marked by the remains of bark on the ground and the width of the site.

I am somewhat surprised by the "perfect directions" in the comment dated 28/07/2025. However, the walk is well worth it, especially at the beginning with beautiful views of the Jordane valley (Mandailles) and at the end of the route with very beautiful views of the Puy Griou and the Puy de l'Usclade (views behind you). The rest of the route is mainly covered by trees.

At the start there is a small change: the car park is no longer at the top of the pass (there is a picnic area instead) but before the pass on the left the GR no longer goes over the pass but leaves at the end of the car park and crosses the road opposite the signpost, at point 4 just after the buron take the wide path on the right and cross the torrent via the recent wooden bridge, take the time to visit "liadouze", a superb typical house, the weather is good and there are no problems.

A very pleasant hike, quite challenging due to its steep descents and sharp climbs, nothing exceptional but... Speaking of descents, the one at the beginning is quite memorable. It looks like a Roman road where the cobblestones have been mixed up to make the path as chaotic as possible, making it difficult to descend quickly (yes, no one was forcing me to go fast, but that's my strategy :-) ). In short, beautiful views punctuate the route and the route through the town gives this hike a cultural dimension, which is great! This time, the actual elevation gain was pretty much the same as predicted by Viso, which was cool! In the last part of the climb, some brave cows were blocking the path, so we had to be clever to get past them, which added a bit of excitement! In any case, I really enjoyed this hike, thanks to the creator.

Magnificent views on this beautiful hike. We preferred the first part up to Liadouze. The two waterfalls were barely flowing in this very dry month of August. Bread oven in Larmandie and another in Liadouze. The loop between 9 and 10 is unnecessary because you can see the Puy de l'Usclade at other points and the climb is a bit tedious. After 11, there are some ruined burons and a beautiful view of the Puy Griou. You then cross a beautiful beech forest. The Mandailles valley is truly superb.
We continued on to the Puy de l'Elancèze.

A very pleasant hike with great views (special mention for the last two kilometres at the end of the hike, which are simply magnificent).
Best done in hot weather as most of the route is shaded and there are a few places to stop and cool off!
Please note: some meadows cross the path, and we had the unpleasant surprise of coming face to face with a cow, which was clearly not scared, just curious... But we still took a little detour off the path to avoid it

Superb hike with beautiful views of the Mandailles valley. Passage at the foot of Puy Griou among fields of gentians. The end of the descent to Mandailles is not very pleasant on a very rough and stony path.

Superb views of the valley, very pleasant paths, a beautiful walk. A little physically demanding on the climb between points 6 and 7 and at the end of the descent on wet (that day?) and slippery stones.
thanks for the hike!

We did this route starting from Mandailles, which allows you to set off in the morning and, if you wish, extend the walk by going to the Pic de l'Elancèze (+/- 250 m) and back (see other Visorando listing).

A very pleasant walk with beautiful views and plenty of shade. It is well signposted; just follow the author's instructions. Thank you to him!
We didn't like the end of the walk on the forest paths that follow the GR trail, as they are busier and less shaded.
We recommend this hike
