Starting point: the Fontinettes boat lift in Arques.
(S/E) Head west and take the towpath to walk alongside the canal on your left. Continue straight on along the specially constructed path.
(1) Walk past the Écluse des Flandres lock, then cross the access channel to the marina via a footbridge.
(2) At the foot of the railway bridge, turn right. Walk alongside the railway line on your left and then the marina on your right. Go through a gate and continue along Rue du Loucheur. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the level crossing.
(3) Cross the railway line at the level crossing and turn left onto Avenue François Mitterrand. Take the first path on the left (Chemin de l’Étang). At the Fork in the road, follow the path on the left (carry on straight ahead). Walk alongside the railway line on your left and the Étang Beauséjour (former gravel pit) on your right.
(4) Turn right and cross the pond via the embankment. At the end, move away from the pond and follow the road, which first curves to the right and then turns right.
(5) Turn left onto Rue Michelet towards Étang de Malhove. After passing under the railway bridge, you’ll reach Étang de Malhove.
(6) Walk round the pond on the right-hand side and, halfway along its eastern bank, turn right onto the path. Continue along Rue de Montpellier.
(7) Turn left into Rue de Bordeaux. At the end, turn right. Cross the D210 road (take care) and continue straight ahead. After about 75 metres, let the street bend to the right and carry on straight ahead along a dirt track, following the stream ‘Le Vieux Fossé’ on your right. When you reach a bridge, continue along a small road (do not cross the bridge).
(8) At the edge of the forest, turn right and follow a path along the edge of the woodland for about 800 metres.
(9) Turn right and cross the Vieux Fossé. You’ll come to a path; cross the railway line at the level crossing and come to another path. After about a hundred metres, take the first path on the right (west-south-west). At the end of this, continue along Rue Parmentier. At the next junction, turn left and you’ll come out onto Avenue Pierre Mendès-France.
(10) Turn right onto the avenue and take the second left, Rue Pierre Curie. Walk alongside the railway line again, on your right. When the street bends to the left, turn right, carefully cross the railway line via the gate and return to the boat lift (S/E).
