Jasse du Play shelter - Pré Peyret hut

The fourth stage of this crossing is also the least physically demanding. Very flat and short, it takes you across vast meadows. But you can spice it up with the Grand Veymont option.

Description of the walk

(S) Start from the Jasse du Play shelter on theGR®91. You’ll soon reach the Plaine de la Chau and then the Fontaine de la Chau.

(1) Continue south after the fountain and reach a fork where there is a sign; turn left for the Grand Veymont route via the Pas de la Ville
Ignore this direction and continue straight ahead on theGR®9to reach the Fontaine des Serrons crossroads.

(2) Carry on to the right along theGR® and, following an almost level path, reach the Prairie de la Grande Cabane.

(3). Be sure to take the path marked by cairns that runs past the sheepfold, not the one that climbs up and goes behind the sheepfold. Continue along theGR®91until you reach a sign indicating Châtillon en Diois is 22km away.

(4) Turn right at this sign to reach the Pré Peyret hut; camping is possible or you can spend the night in the hut (E).

A very easy and enjoyable day. The Pré Peyret hut is absolutely stunning. It was so beautiful that we slept in our tent right next to it, and we spotted ibex and vultures in the morning.
Please note: when we were there in August 2023, the spring was barely trickling.

We didn’t do the Grand Veymont because we were tired from the day before. But it’s a recommended route if you’re a very experienced hiker with a light rucksack. You can see a superb panorama at the top and some ibex. Bear in mind that the path is a bit deceptive; it feels as though you’ve reached the summit when you haven’t. Apparently it’s a technical and difficult route, so it’s up to you to decide based on your fitness level! There’s a spring at the foot of the Veymont.
