The Majurin valley

This route takes you to the Majurin valley from Château-Salins. The Majurin is a stream that flows through a plain surrounded by small woods. The valley is very close to Coutures and Château-Salins, yet you feel as though you are in the heart of the countryside, far from it all. The walk offers some beautiful panoramic views. It alternates pleasantly between sections deep in the forest and out in the open. As it presents no difficulties, this circular walk is ideal for a family outing.

Description of the walk

Car park in front of the former Château-Salins Magistrates’ Court on Rue Beaurepaire.

(S/E) Join the D674, turn right and follow the road as far as the last house. When you reach it, you’ll see a sign indicating a marked path on your right (marked by Randomoselle; it does not appear on maps).

(1) After 700 m along the path, take the second small metal bridge on the left (signposted). Then climb the steps leading from it. At the end of this path, turn right onto a wide track which is shown on maps. At the end of this track, you’ll come out onto the Route de la Marchande.

(2) Turn right and walk along the road for 250 m until you reach a junction and a car park. Turn left onto the forest track winding through the Bois de Charmeval.

(3) After more than 1.5 km, as you come out of a very sharp bend, take the first path on the right (there is a second one a few metres further on, which you should ignore). Cross the Bois du Four and, after 400 m, you’ll reach the Majurin valley. Turn right, then take the wide, stony path on the left.

(4) After 250 m, take the path on the right (not shown on maps) which takes you along the right bank of the Majurin. At the end of this path, at a junction, turn right. After 300 m, rejoin the wide stony path, which leads onto a small tarmac road; follow this until you reach some large farm buildings on your left. ‘'Note the “Calvary of the Mission Cross” on your right''.

(5) Opposite the farm buildings, take the path on the right (signposted). After 80 m, take the path on the left, bypassing the village of Coutures.

(6) When you reach a junction, just before the cemetery, take the path on the right and follow it for 1.2 km (signposted). You’ll come out onto Rue du Stade de Château-Salins; take this road to the right for 80 m.

(7) Between two properties, take the path leading uphill to the right. At the end of this path, turn left (this section is not shown on maps) to walk through the gardens and return to Rue Beaurepaire, your starting point (S/E).

A very pleasant walk with lovely, unobstructed views along much of the route. It’s a shame the paths were still quite muddy after this very wet end to winter. The first section is well signposted with a yellow line. Do take care, however, from point no. 3: the path to take on the right into the woods is marked with a Yellow Cross. As we couldn’t see any obvious alternative on the map, we followed it anyway using the GPS, as indicated in the route description. Whilst the first hundred metres were fine, the marked path soon disappeared and there were fallen trees and branches strewn everywhere. We persevered, zigzagging our way through as best we could, as the tricky stretch to get out of the woods was only about 300 metres. It seems this path is no longer suitable. After that, we had no further trouble reaching point 4 quickly. Might the second path, marked ‘ignore’ in the description at point 3, have provided a suitable alternative route? It’s not clear from the map. I’ll therefore leave it to the author to see if any changes can be made to this short, tricky section. Thank you for this lovely walk.
