Esteribar - Puente la Reina

Forty-eighth stage of the Camino de Santiago. A stage like today’s is described in Spanish as: todo derechostraight ahead all the way. You walk alongside the River Arga with little change in elevation until you reach Pamplona, at the foot of a group of hills covered in beech, oak and wild pine trees. As you approach Pamplona, the landscape becomes more clearly influenced by civilisation, with its conifers, reforestation and farmland.
The rest of the stage is dominated by the Alto del Perdón, which offers a magnificent view. From there, you can see Pamplona and the Pyrenees behind, and opposite, the vast Navarrese plain. You will spend part of the day climbing up and down this mountain range, passing through quiet little towns that resemble islands floating amongst the fields of grain.

Description of the walk

(S) From the campsite, continue through the park, heading south-west, following the Arga on your left. Go under the N-135 to arrive at a picnic area.

(1) Turn left (south-west) at the information signs, onto a steep path that winds through scrubland. Continue until you reach an open area at the edge of the forest.

(2) Turn 90° left (south-east) to follow the edge of the woods on your right along the narrow stony path. You will arrive at the hamlet of Arleta.

(3) Walk past the Church of Santa Marina, then continue for about a kilometre along beautiful paths through the countryside. You will reach a fork in the road, just before the PA-30.

(4) Take the left-hand path through the tunnel under the road, then turn right up a slight incline onto a concrete track running parallel to the main road, before descending to the Ulzama, a tributary of the Arga, at the Puenté de la Trinidad.

(5) Cross the river via this beautiful medieval bridge, with five arches and a length of 55 m, then turn left onto Calle Mayor to enter the town of Villava. Continue in this direction until the junction with Calle San Andrés Kalea.

(6) Cross carefully and continue straight on (south-west) along Avenida Serapio Huici until you reach thesecond roundabout.

(7) Continue straight on (south-west), following the signs for Pamplona. After carefully crossing several junctions, you will reach a roundabout with a fish-tail-shaped sculpture in the centre.

(8) Take the2nd exit on the right and continue along Rue Larrainzar. Pass a secondary school on your right, then, at the entrance to the school’s sports hall, turn left. Cross the two lanes of Avenue Bizkarmendia with care.

(9) Continue to the right (north-west), passing a garden centre, then turn left onto Rue Burlada. Stay on the left-hand pavement and continue until you reach the fork at a large stone wall.

(10) Go straight on along the one-way Rue Burlada and continue to the end of the street to reach the Arga River.

(11) Cross the river carefully, then turn right and take the medieval Magdalena Bridge on your left. Walk through the small wooded park until you reach a set of traffic lights.

(12) Cross carefully and continue straight ahead into Guadalupe Bastion Park, which you go round on your left before reaching the Portal de Francia.

(13) Go through the gate and, at the top of the hill, pass through the Zumalacarregui Gate to leave the Bastion and enter the city of Pamplona.

(14) Please note: here, temporarily leave the signposting to walk past the cathedral. Turn left into Calle del Redín, then right into the pretty cobbled alleyway Calle Redín. At Plazuela de San José, continue to the right, walking alongside the Cathedral of Santa María de Pamplona, to reach Plaza de la Dormitalería, in front of the cathedral’s main entrance.

(15) Please note: here you will find the route markers displayed high up on the façades. With your back to the monument, head down the one-way street, which leads you through a maze of small pedestrian streets to the tourist office.

(16) Turn right after the tourist office, then veer left onto Calle San Saturnino. Walk past the Church of San Saturnino and follow the signs for the Camino de Santiago to reach the Church of San Lorenzo at the end of the street.

(17) Cross the junction and continue straight on, keeping a park on your right. Continue until you reach the remains of a gate of the Portal de la Taconera castle.

(18) Cross Avenue de Pio XII carefully to the left, then continue to the right until you reach the crossroads, which you should cross just as carefully.

(19) Continue through the gardens of the Ciudadela de Pamplona fortress. Please note that from here on, the route is marked by bronze shells fixed to the ground. Walk through the park until you reach the entrance to the fortifications.

(20) Leave the park and continue to the right. Cross Vuelta del Castillo Street, then, after a right/left turn, continue on the left-hand pavement along Fuente del Hierro Street. Continue to thethird roundabout

(21) Staying on the left-hand pavement, continue straight ahead, passing under a bridge before arriving on the left-hand side of the Burlada roundabout, where the Fuente del Hierro fountain is hidden by the trees. Continue along the footpath to reach the left-hand side of a roundabout, at a fork.

(22) First turn right then left, following the footpath along Rue de l'Université. Continue to the roundabout.

(23) Take thesecond exit on the right, Calle de la Universidad, following a stream on your left until you reach the medieval Puente de Acella bridge. Cross this bridge to reach a roundabout.

(24) Continue straight on, following the signs for Cizur Menor. Leave the town of Pamplona Iruna, staying on the footpath. Cross a small stone bridge, then pass through a picnic area before walking alongside the NA-7027 and continuing to the bridge that crosses a railway line.

(25) Continue straight on until you reach a roundabout. Carry on straight ahead, heading south-west, cross over the A15 motorway, before arriving in the town of Cizur Menor at a roundabout.

(26) Head towards Campanas. A few hundred metres further on, at thesecond roundabout, continue straight ahead onto the NA-6000, using the pedestrian crossing next to a children’s playground. Continue to the speed bump.

(27) Continue to the right (south-west) along a path that crosses a park and leads to the municipal pelota court. On leaving the park, continue to the left (south-west) along the Camino de Santiago. Walk to the end of the street, to the Stop sign.

(28) Continue straight ahead along a path through the fields, which joins a tarmac road on the outskirts of the town of Zizur Mayor. Walk to the roundabout.

(29) Go round the roundabout on the left and continue along the small tarmac road that runs alongside the field on your left. Carry on until you pass an electricity pylon before reaching a crossroads.

(30) Turn left onto a gravel path through the fields, then continue to the wooded area at the crossroads.

(31) Continue straight on, towards Galar. Cross the NA-6004 with care and continue straight ahead, along a gently ascending track, until you reach the small Lake Balsa, surrounded by greenery.

(32) Continue left, heading south-west, along the path through the fields. Pass the path leading to a cemetery (crosses and benches) and carry on to the small village of Zariquiegui. Picnic tables and a water tap are available at the village entrance.

(33) Cross the village (refreshments available in the village centre) and continue your way through the cereal fields, before beginning a long climb. Pass the Gambellacos fountain before reaching the highest point of the route, located near the Fosas de la Sierra del Perdón memorial, surrounded by a wind farm.

(34) Cross the NA-6056 with care and begin the descent towards Uterga. The route takes you through a deciduous woodland along a wide, rather unpleasant path with numerous loose stones underfoot. Take great care on the descent and continue to a crossroads.

(35) Continue carefully down the slope, turning left (south), until you leave the woodland. Continue along dirt tracks passing between fields of grain, until you reach a crossroads.

(36) Turn left (south) and continue to the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary.

(37) Continue on to the village of Uterga. Walk through the village, following the signposts. Pass the town hall and a fountain, and continue along the main street until you reach the Casa Baztán Hostel.

(38) Leave the main street and continue straight ahead. Take the first street on the right, which leads you out of the village onto a wide stony path. Continue to the crossroads.

(39) Turn right, heading south-west, and continue your countryside walk along narrow paths following a ridge line to Muruzábal. Carry on straight ahead until you reach the Stop sign.

(40) Continue left onto the NA-6062, pass the church and carry on to the wooden cross at the village exit.

(41) Turn right onto the path leading down towards the fields and continue to the tunnel that passes under the NA-601.

(42) Stay on the path to reach the village of Obanos. Walk up the small street until you reach a wall built of large stones.

(43) Turn right. Stay on this street until you reach No. 17.

(44) Turn left, then first turn right then left to reach Calle San Lorenzo. Continue along this street until you reach the pretty square in front of the Church of San Juan Bautista.

(45) Walk to the left of the church, under the stone archway, then turn right to pass in front of the fronton and reach a Stop sign. Cross the road and, following the signposts, continue straight ahead to leave the village. Walk on until you reach the junction with the NA-6064.

(46) Cross the road carefully and continue along the path opposite, which leads to the Jakue Hostel.

(47) Continue to the left, then turn left onto the NA-11 to enter the town of Puente la Reina. Continue to the Padres Reparadores Hostel.

(48) Turn left, then right at the Convento del Crucifijo church. Stay on this narrow street – where you can get supplies – which crosses a main road, and continue to the end. Cross the pretty footbridge over the River Arga.

(49) Cross the NA-7040 carefully and follow the signs for Albergue Santiago Apostol to find the campsite a little further on the right (E).

Notes

Practical tips for this section: leaving Pamplona can seem a bit confusing; pay attention to the signposts, which consist of bronze shells nailed to the ground. Follow the route without getting distracted. If you ask locals for directions, they may give you conflicting instructions, as there are two ways to leave the city: the official route and the historic route.

Supply points: at the start, in the village of Zariquiegui (33) and in Puente la Reina (47)

Worth a visit

Many villages and hamlets along the way are well worth a visit

Magdalena Bridge at the entrance to Pamplona. The construction of this bridge, spanning the River Arga, dates back to the 12th century, but it was modified in the 19th century. At one end of the bridge, a cross, probably from the 16th century, marks the entrance of the Camino de Santiago into the city; it bears the effigy of Saint James.

The City of Pamplona with its must-see sights:
the Citadel and Vuelta del Castillo Park
The Town Hall – Plaza Consistorial
Santa María la Real Cathedral
The Bullring and Monument to the Running of the Bulls
Plaza del Castillo

The village of Cizur Menor (26)

The Alto del Perdón (34) forms part of the Sierra del Perdón, a pre-Pyrenean mountain range reaching an altitude of 1,036 metres. A field of 40 wind turbines was gradually installed on the mountain between 1994 and 2008, helping to make Navarre a pioneer in this type of renewable energy.

This is a hike that forms part of the Camino de Santiago, which I plan to do in September. So I haven’t done it yet. I’ve downloaded all the hikes for this journey starting from Roncesvalles, and the descriptions are very well written. I’ll be sure to share my thoughts once I’ve completed it.
