Adi ascent

The Adi overlooks the Urepel valley and the Quinto Real, which belonged to the kings of Navarre. The inhabitants paid a grazing fee corresponding to one-fifth of the herds, the quint.
Currently reduced to 2,000 ha on the French side, but belonging to Spain, only the families of Saint-Étienne de Baïgorry have use of it. Herd owners pay a grazing fee (vacade) for each animal. This is why a fence marks the boundary of the Quinto Real.

Description of the walk

At Saint-Étienne-de-Baigorry, take the D948 towards Les Aldudes. After Les Aldudes, turn right onto the D58 Pamplona road. Pass Esnazu and continue to Col d'Urquiaga 910 m. Small car park on the left.

(S/E) Take the track heading East into the forest. Leave it very quickly, after about 100 m, for the well-marked path on the left, until you rejoin the track.

(1) Follow this track.

(2) Leave the GR® on the left, which climbs along the ridge. Continue along the track for 450 m.

(3) Leave the track and take a forest track on the left to reach the collet d'Adipeko Lepoa... (multidirectional post)

(4) To the left is the path we'll be taking back. Go straight ahead along the rough grassy path due south. Follow a fence along the ridge. A little further on, avoid some rocks by a hook and rejoin the fence and the ridge. The ridge bends South-East towards the end, and the slope becomes gentler until you reach the summit of Adi. Beautiful panorama.

(5)Descend due East. The path is well marked and joins the fence. Follow this grassy path northeast down the ridge to the Col d'Aratun 1209 m. Signpost .

(6) Take the marked path to the left, then a track which we follow westwards. We cross pastures and a well-marked path takes us back to the Adipeko Lepoa pass where we passed on the outward journey.

(4) Take the uphill path in the opposite direction to the car park (S/E).

A very beautiful walk with superb views of both the Spanish and French sides from the top of Adi. Note the impressive system of underground bunkers dating back to the Franco era.

A walk in the undergrowth for most of the route, with no difficulties but rough at the start.
Lovely views but the weather was miserable that day.
Remain vigilant as there are indeed other markings.
Thank you

Walk in the woods, cool for most of the route, with no difficulties.
Clarification of the starting point: you should continue a few kilometres past the border to reach the Urquiaga pass and not stop at the first car park at the foot of the venta.
The GPS route is reliable and ensures that you don't stray from the route.
Be careful, however, not to deviate from the path just before arriving at stage 4 and reach a gate leading to the start of the ascent of Adi via a ridge. Ignore the markings on a tree suggesting that you take a roundabout route, as it's a real nightmare to reach the summit of Adi through forest, heather and barbed wire... even though you're only a few steps from the gate.
At the top, you can enjoy a beautiful panorama without the crowds. Very enjoyable, I recommend it.

We didn't climb the Adi because the yellow markers made us take Eugi's mountain bike route, so watch out.
Beautiful forest
