Between Grémecey and Vic-sur-Seille

A loop between Grémecey and Vic-sur-Seille, starting on the GR®5, mainly in the woods, returning on minor roads.

You'll need a GPS, as the signposting is poor in places and there are many false trails. By false trails, we mean beautiful, wide paths where you can walk happily, forgetting to turn off onto small paths where the start is hard to see.

The start through the woods is pleasant and shady, after the visit to Vic-sur-Seille, which is well worth the effort. You have to get back by the shortest route, and the small roads make this possible. An attempt to return via the old railway line proved impossible.

Before entering the Forêt Domaniale de Grémecey, there are some very fine views.

Description of the walk

The walk starts from the church in Grémecey, where parking is available.

(S/E) Opposite the church entrance, turn right onto Chemin de Veau, and follow the GR®5 signs. Pass in front of the Fontaine, la Vierge, above the Ruisseau de Blanche Fontaine, and continue on the small road, Chemin du Haut du Mont; the climb is steep.

(1) At the top of the hill, at the end of the road, turn left onto the gravel track known as the Route Forestière de la Belle Fille.

(2) At the T-junction of two gravel tracks, turn right onto Route Forestière de Merlinsol, passing under a power line.

(3) In the bend to the left of the track, with a relic of the 14/18 war, take the dirt track to the left.

(4) At hill 309, fork right onto the track.

(5) At the Bois Pétard post, turn left, following the arrow indicating Croix de l'Homme. The path is little used and there are many false trails, so be careful.

(6) At the Croix de l'Homme, find a wide track and turn right onto the Tranchée de l'Étoile.

(7) At the end of the track, turn right onto Chemin de la Reine, heading due south.

(8) At the Brainval signpost, follow the track to the left and cross over the Ruisseau (le Majurin).

(9) At the entrance to the wood, ignore the nice straight path and turn right through the tall grass for 30 m, then take the left-hand bend to enter the wood and continue straight ahead on the narrow path.

(10) At hill 234, turn left after the marker post, where the path becomes a grassy track.

(11) At marker 218, it is tempting to continue straight ahead on the good grass track, but you have to go left into the tall grass to find a small bridge over the stream.

(12) Find a wide track and follow it to the right.

(13) Carefully cross the D674 and continue straight ahead to reach the village of Salonnes on the Rue Principale, passing a roadside cross.

(14) At the T-junction of two roads, continue straight ahead on Rue Principale, passing over La Petite Seille, then make the short diversions to the church entrance. Return to Rue Principale, pass over the Canal du Moulin, then cross the old railway line with the old station on the left, and continue straight ahead.

(15) At the Y junction, turn right onto Chemin de la Haute Borne.

(16) At the edge of the wood, turn right onto the narrow lane and pass over the vines.

(17) At the T junction, turn right down the track and join the small road.

(18) Follow the road to the left to reach Vic-sur-Seille, and continue straight ahead.

(19) Leave the GR®5. At the crossroads with the picnic table and Christ on the Cross, turn right down the road for 80 m.

(20) At the Y junction, fork left into Rue de Metz, continue along this street and cross over the River Seille.

(21) Continue straight on, Rue Georges de la Tour, for 40 m.

(22) At the left-hand bend in this street, continue straight on to cross the Place aux Deux Fontaines, then continue straight on into Rue Meynier.

(23) Turn right into Rue de la Gare.

(24) Turn right to pass under the Porte des Évêques, and continue straight on. Turn left to go around the church.

(25) Turn left onto Place Philippe Leroy and drive past the former Carmelite Convent and the Town Hall.

(26) Turn right into Rue des Prisons, then left and right again to cross over La Seille. Continue straight on, Rue Liégoise, and find a fork in the road you passed earlier.

(20) Go straight ahead and, following the same route as before, come to another fork in the road, which you also passed on the outward journey.

(18) Keep to the left and once again come to a fork in the road that you passed on the outward journey.

(15) Turn left and follow the opposite route to Salonnes.

(14) At the entrance to the village, turn left.

(27) Carefully cross the D674 and continue straight ahead on the D77 to Chambrey.

(28) In Chambrey, drive past the church, straight through the village on the Rue Principale and continue on the D77 to Pettoncourt.

(29) In Pettoncourt, in the centre of the village, turn right towards Grémecey, and continue on the D77b to reach Grémecey (S/E).
