Description of the walk

The hike starts at the junction of the D23a and the Tranchée Saint-Roch in the commune of Chambrey. Parking is available in a small square.

(S/E) Take the path called Tranchée de Saint-Roch, which is indicated by a large sign.

(1) In the woods, take the first wide path down to the left. At the end of the path, at the edge of the woods and at the T-junction, turn left and cross the small stream. Join a wide grassy track.

(2) Take the path on the left and climb up to visit the chapel and the spring. After your visit, retrace your steps.

(2) Continue straight ahead to join the D674.

(3) Cross it carefully and continue on the D77a towards the village, passing in front of the Imperial Station.

(4) Cross over the Seille river.

(5) At the end of the road, in the centre of the village, turn right onto the main street, then onto the Salonnes road, passing in front of the church and the crucifix.

(6) Cross the Majurin and continue to join the D674.

(7) Cross it carefully and turn right along the road, pass over the Seille and continue straight ahead on the small road, pass in front of the entrance to Burthécourt Castle, and join the D38 by going around the pavilion.

(8) Cross the D38 with caution, and as the path opposite no longer exists, turn right onto the side of the road, reach the crossroads and continue for 200 m, with caution, on the D674.

(9) Take the first gravel track on the left.

(10) At the entrance to the woods, pass over a small illegal dump to join the uphill track of the Grande Fagotière. Pass in front of the German memorial.

(11) At the top of the hill, continue on the gravel track of the Grande Fagotière and straight ahead on part of the Tranchée du Bois Rougy, staying on the gravel track.

(12) At the end of the stony track, cross the clearing and continue along the wide woodland path. Almost at the end of the path, a fallen tree blocks the track: go around it and continue straight ahead as the path is not very visible.

(13) At the T-junction, turn right onto the wide wooden path. Join a wide stony track, Tranchée de la Haie Maye.

(14) Turn left onto it.

(15) At the Y-junction with another stony track, turn right to reach Bezange-la-Grande. At the edge of the woods, on the Haut de Bellaire hillside, you will see the remains of a blockhouse from the First World War.

(16) In the village at the end of the track, continue right onto Rue des Jonquilles. Continue on this small road to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Wear good shoes as some sections are in tall grass.

At the junction with the D38, the IGN map shows a path leading back up to the national forest, and this path is visible on the satellite view, but unfortunately it is cultivated! Another path that disappears.

Worth a visit

In Chambrey: the Saint-Roch Chapel, the imperial railway station and the contemporary church.

In the national forest, a German memorial monument, unfortunately surrounded by brambles.

Views of the two villages.
