Description of the walk

The walk starts at the church in Moncel-sur-Seille, where you can park in the streets around the church.

(S/E) Facing the church, turn left, then take Rue Jules Grandidier on the right. Cross over the Loutre Noire.

(1) After the second bridge, take Rue des Ervantes uphill to the left until you reach a grassy track on the left.

(2) Go through the three gates in the fences (registered communal path) and enter the woods.

(3) At a Y-junction, turn left and continue straight ahead until you reach a stony track (old railway line).

(4) Turn right and follow the track along the edge of the woods.

(5) After the woods, at the junction of two tracks, continue straight ahead on the old railway line. Do not turn right towards the Rosebois farm, as access is not permitted.

(6) At Chambrey imperial station, take the D77a on the right.

(7) Join the D674, cross it carefully and continue straight ahead on the grass track.

(8) Continue along the track opposite to visit the Saint-Roch Chapel.

(9) After your visit, retrace your steps.

(8) Take the small path on the right, cross the stream and enter the woods.

(10) Take the wide forest track uphill to the right.

(11) Join a grassy track and take the Tranchée Saint-Roch on the left.

(12) At the end of the track, turn onto the gravel track on the right, Route de la Grande Fagoterie, and join another gravel track.

(13) Turn right to continue on Route de la Grande Fagoterie, which joins the D23a.

(14) Turn left and stay on the small road: the woods opposite are a nature reserve and access is prohibited.

(15) After the woods, take the first grassy track downhill to the right, pass over the Loutre Noire and go around the Moulin de Sainte-Marie. Join the D23.

(16) Turn right and follow the road for about 100 metres.

Worth a visit

The Moncel-sur-Seille passage.

A walk in the Bois Saint-Roch and Sainte-Marie woods.

The Saint Roch Chapel.

The imperial railway station at Chambrey.

Between the (2) and the (3), as you enter the Rosebois woods, on the uphill stretch, to the left and right of the path, you can see areas of trenches dating from the First World War. On the left, at the junction of two trenches, there is an underground shelter next to the path. Keep your eyes peeled to find it. On the right, opposite, hikers who are very interested can follow the trench in the woods for 50 metres to find the entrance to an underground passage which, according to people we met, leads to the two-storey blockhouse at the entrance to Moncel sur Seille.

Just before the (4), in the woods, there is an area of First World War remains with an old collapsed earth bunker.

At the (3), you can take a short detour to see a concrete shelter from the First World War. Take the path on the right, then take the left at the crossroads. After 30 metres, in the woods, the shelter appears on the left. Continue along the path and take the first path on the left to rejoin the route.
